On our latest episode of Sailing Supernova, we embarked on an incredible journey to the San Blas Islands in Panama. This stunning archipelago is a sailor’s dream, offering crystal-clear waters, lush green islands, and a truly unique local experience.
Sailing to the San Blas Islands
We set sail from Linton Bay, ready for an adventure. Our first stop was Chichim Island, known for its fantastic snorkeling spots and picturesque scenery.
The Island Life
After exploring Chichim, we fully immersed ourselves in the island life. We met local residents who called these beautiful islands home and learned about their way of life. It’s not every day you get to visit a coconut farm run by a friendly Kuna family or learn how they protect endangered species like lionfish.
Exploring the Uninhabited Islands
We ventured to uninhabited islands, untouched by tourists. These hidden gems boasted pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a wealth of marine life. However, it’s essential to remember that these islands are part of the Kuna Yala territory, and we must respect their rules.
The Abandoned Sand Blast Ferry
Our expedition took an exciting turn when we discovered a long-forgotten shipwreck belonging to the San Blas Ferry company. The local cruisers told us its fascinating story, making it a highlight of our journey.
Savoring Local Delights
Throughout our stay, we indulged in the local delights, from fresh coconuts and cold beers to the warm hospitality of the Kuna people. The San Blas Islands are not just a paradise for sailors but also a window into an indigenous culture that thrives in harmony with nature.
Preparation and Respecting Local Customs
To make the most of your San Blas experience, ensure you’re well-prepared for the sailing conditions and be mindful of local customs. This includes obtaining a permit from the indigenous people (the Kuna) who own these islands, practicing responsible tourism, and following their guidelines on fishing, diving, and snorkeling.
Embracing Paradise
In the end, our trip to the San Blas Islands was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s more than just a sailing adventure; it’s about connecting with nature and learning from the rich culture of the Kuna people. We left Chichim feeling blessed and inspired by this untouched corner of paradise.
