#65 Dodging Firefighting Planes whilst at Sea. Grand Canaria, Canary Islands | Sailing Sisu Leopard
On arrival in Grand Canaria, we had to dodge Firefighting Planes whilst also negotiating big container ships and ferries. A raging fire had been going for over 4 days, caused by an 55 year old who was working with a Welding Machine. The blaze forced the evacuation of about 9,000 people. More than 700 firefighters supported by 11 helicopters and five hydroplanes were struggling to contain the fire.
Grand Canaria in the Canary Islands is an island we did not intend visiting, but the pressing need for our Life Raft took us there. We have previously packed, or rather tied it together and couriered it off to Viking in Grand Canaria so that they could put the genie back in the bottle. Frustrated that it had not yet arrived back in Lanzarote, we decided to sail there and go to their offices direct. Long story short, they did put the genie back, and also made certain that the contents of the Life Raft was 100% accounted for. This exercise put us back 1,700 EUR . . .

We are two crazies from South Africa, Frik & Petro. We knew absolutely nothing about sailing, but the ocean has always been calling. So we got rid of all our stuff, bought a Leopard 45 Catamaran, and set sail. Follow us as this story unfolds! This is a sea-life adventure captained by a couple of nomads who have built their lives on doing what inspires them in the moment. SISU (Finnish concept) is a grim, gritty, white-knuckle form of courage in situations where success is against the odds. Taking action against the odds and displaying courage and resoluteness in the face of adversity, in other words, deciding on a course of action and then sticking to that decision even despite repeated failures.
