The long-awaited day finally arrived—the annual winter golf trip the group has been anticipating all year. It’s a trip they call ‘Super Bowl Golf Trip’. This getaway, which started in 2011, allows these eight friends to escape the cold and snow for a week-long adventure in a warm, sun-drenched destination.
Originally initiated by two Vikings fans who didn’t want to hear about Packers fans winning the Super Bowl, this trip has since grown to include 10 people. The itinerary now features a Ryder Cup-style format with both team and individual challenges. Alongside friendly golf competition, there’s betting on the Super Bowl itself, adding another layer of excitement.
The group meets to shop for essential supplies—groceries, booze, beer—before settling into their luxurious house for the week-long event. The property boasts 8 bedrooms, 8 baths, a spectacular pool (that needs some fixing but works well enough), and more. Credit card roulette determines who gets which room.
Participants agree that a minimum of 15 drinks per day are a must, with plenty of opportunities for socializing with Maye. A lot of fun games take place over the week, including sheriff games in honor of Denny Green, and other team-oriented competitions.
Rules may change slightly from year to year but include specific actions like trying to hit the green on every hole, purchasing drinks for Lamar, attempting to get him to bed when needed, and just having fun while showing up for important events like the Super Bowl game.
In terms of golf games, the group plays a shamble, where each team member plays their best shot on each hole and then picks the ball closest to the hole. They also do a two-man best ball play, four-ball, and individual performance brackets that tie into the final Super Bowl betting results. This year’s controversies include disagreements over out-of-bounds rulings but are generally resolved.
Favorite meals of the trip include Nick’s chicken fajitas and the steak dinner cooked to perfection by Steve Winnery. Dancing skills are tested, especially with a special dance move named after Justin Nelson. The tournament moves to Palm Springs next year.
Justin S. is deemed the worst putter this year, while Lamar’s addition of BBQ sauce on his steak during dinner at the Winnery Steak Dinner is a highlight for some. Best dance move is Justin Nelson’s ‘Snelson’.
The group plays at Bella Colina golf course, known for its greens, fairways, and sand traps. The weekend includes moments that can be uncomfortable, like when Eric gets too personal or when Steve Lamar needs to ‘regulate’ Shawn by making a dramatic gesture with his private parts. Despite these moments, the trip is deemed a success.
The Super Bowl Golf Trip has been a tradition since 2011 and promises to continue well into the future. This unique tradition combines friendship, golf, laughter, and warm winter getaways into an unforgettable experience.

Filmed in 2017, all of this footage was left untouched and unwatched until the passing of our great friend, Steve Lehmeyer in Jan of 2021, just 2 weeks before this trip takes place each year. Steve was an integral part of this trip and our lives.
This video was created in honor of Steve. A true and unfiltered look at the relationships these guys have with Steve and each other. The raw, harsh, ball-busting, heartfelt and loving relationships.
