We Bought the WRONG Land… Then This Happened

Several months ago, we put in an offer on what felt like our dream property near Bryson City, North Carolina. It was everything we were looking for: a large lot with plenty of buildable land in a beautiful area. But just a few days after submitting our offer, we were devastated to find out it was rejected. The owners decided to accept another offer that came in the same day as ours.

So, we went back to the drawing board and in our eagerness to get started, we ended up purchasing this half-acre lot. It’s in a great location with a stunning view—but it’s far from perfect. The lot is much smaller than we’d hoped for, the driveway and front yard are incredibly steep, and after consulting with a structural engineer and an excavator, we realized that the particulars of our build site would make it quite expensive to build our dream home here.

But for the past couple months I’ve kept a close eye on the land market in this area. And recently, several promising properties have popped up on our radar.
So this week, we’re going to check out those properties—and apply everything we’ve learned so far about site prep and excavation to see if we should just commit to building on our land, or if one of these properties might be a better option for our dream mountain homestead.
