So the fact is that there are a lot of scary things that can happen to us as we sail the world.
We can get hit by a rouge wave or a massive gale. We could drag anchor into dangerous shore. We could get struck by lightning or start taking on water. But of all the things that could happen, the one that scares me the most is someone falling overboard. It’s one thing if we’re motoring in a flat calm But sailing with 6 foot waves and 18 knots of wind, if one of us falls overboard, the odds are very low that that person will survive. By the time the person still on the boat is able to react and do an emergency heave to to stop the boat, we could be a quarter of a mile away. And trying to spot a person from that distance, floating among moderately sized waves is nearly impossible.
So while we do have a plan in place if someone falls overboard, we put most of our effort into making sure that we avoid that situation entirely. And we have several systems in place to make sure we stay safely on the boat. But those systems aren’t adequate for our newest smallest crew member. So this week we’re going to install a system that should ensure that everyone on board stays onboard.
