The first question we get after telling anyone about our plans to sail Atticus around the world is always “what about storms”? Before we actually started cruising, we were also pretty nervous about storms at sea, but we’ve tackled this question the same way we do with any every of cruising– we’ve been researching relentlessly and trying as best as we can to learn from seasoned cruisers.
Today we have Lin Pardey joining us, who has sailed over 200,000 miles in her lifetime to talk about her most trusted storm tactics.
Question #1
3:47 Looking back at your sailing career, what was your scariest experience that you’ve had at sea in a storm? What was the most dangerous?
Question #2
When you first started cruising, what did you imagine being at sea in a storm would feel like and how did that change after your first storm? We played the wrong response! To see her response, hop over to our community tab here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck80c-f7YQk
Question #3
20:56 What are your favorite tactics that you’ve you used to stay safe in severe storms at sea? Are there any storm tactics that you have employed that you would NOT recommend, and why?
Question #4
27:36 We’ve read that the loads imposed on both the gear and the boat involved in deploying and retrieving a para-anchor can be extreme- have you found this to be true, and if so, do you have any techniques to manage the gear under such extreme loads?
Question #5
32:34 Have you ever used a Jordan series drogue, or something similar, and what is your opinion of it?
39:41 Do we have medical insurance?
54:39 Getting through our first storm
57:28 Crack in our aluminum mast
