For hundreds of years the people of Southern Appalachia have carved out a livelihood in these mountains. They’ve had to adapt to the challenges of mountain living and have become a hardy and self sufficient people. Technological change has come very slowly to the rural communities of Appalachia so for most of their history if they didn’t grow it or make it themselves, they didn’t have it. And so the techniques and strategies that they’ve developed to survive in these mountains are fascinating.
We’re Jordan, Desiree, Isabella, and Oso. For the past ten years we’ve been sailing around the world but now it’s time for us to settle down and grow some roots. So we’re traveling in our truck and trailer to decide where in this beautiful country we’d like to call home and along the way we’re getting to know our own country like never before.
So join us on our journey this week to discover the incredible traditions and stories of Southern Appalachia and to see if this region could become our new home.
