My wife and I have been sailing around the world for the last 10 years but now with a growing family we're looking to move our adventures inland to the Appalachian mountains where we hope to build a family homestead. So far we’ve been looking at large properties with fixer upper houses on them. Many of these houses have been in such rough shape that we're starting to consider buying raw land and building from scratch.

But really nice land that's not totally in the middle of nowhere costs a fair amount of money. So we’re wondering how much we should spend on this property and how we're going to finance the entire endeavor.
