Sailing in Stormy Spring Seas – Our Eerie Experience in Turbulent Turkey
Spring sailing in Turkey has been nothing short of magical so far, with perfect temperatures and stunning anchorages largely to ourselves amidst one of the most beautiful cruising grounds worldwide. However, an ominous downside emerges early in the season – fierce storms rolling through, making every sail feel like navigating a precarious maze.
Challenges in Anchoring
The unpredictability of wind direction and the deep anchorages pose challenges to finding safe spots. A narrow escape at a marina tucked away becomes a learning lesson for the family, only to realize later that protection wasn’t as secure as thought.
Navigating a Fierce Storm
When forecasted winds arrive with no warning, the family seeks refuge in a marina. Despite warnings from experienced sailors about wind wrapping around mountain sides, they stay protected yet nervous. The storm’s intensity catches everyone off guard, testing their endurance and making them question decisions made during those moments of high anxiety.
Preparation and Decision Making
Faced with a similar scenario again, the family decides to use their best judgment. They prepare their boat meticulously, assessing the risks involved in each decision they make. The anchoring strategy becomes more about intuition than scientific calculation at this point.
Lessons Learned
The most crucial lesson? Knowing when to get off the boat during intense storms and finding secure anchorages is critical for safety. Their ordeal has taught them about the unpredictability of nature and the importance of remaining adaptable to sudden changes in weather.
A Glimmer of Hope
Amidst these trials, the family also discovers beautiful anchorages and local marinas offering warmth and companionship. These moments give them a respite from worry, reaffirming their love for sailing and exploring.
Tips to Avoid Storm-Related Hazards
- Monitor weather forecasts religiously
- Seek shelter in well-sheltered marinas when needed
- Anchoring in less exposed areas can be a lifesaver during storms
- Prioritize the safety of your crew and equipment above all else
As with any adventurous journey, it’s about taking risks but being smart enough to know when to pull back. For this family, sailing through storms has tested their resilience and made them stronger. The adventure continues!

Sailing in Turkey in the Spring has been pretty great so far. The temperature has been perfect and we’ve had some incredible anchorages nearly to ourselves in one of the most beautiful cruising grounds in the world. But there is one major downside to sailing this early in the season. Fierce storms roll through this region in spring, and when they do it can feel like god is tearing a hole through reality. Plus it’s difficult to find good shelter here because the mountainous terrain causes the winds to wrap in unpredictable ways, so we can never be certain if we’re protected from forecasted winds. And the extremely deep anchorages make finding a safe spot to drop the hook a real challenge. Last week after being surprised by some strong winds that appeared out of nowhere, we sought the refuge of a small marina tucked away in a long, narrow bay. And when the forecasts started calling for a storm to come through the area, we decided to stay in the marina until it passed since this bay appeared to have good protection from the forecasted wind direction.
Turns out, we were wrong
