In this riveting episode of Sailing Project Atticus, Captain Kyle and his family find themselves in an intense situation when they are suddenly pursued by a Turkish warship while sailing the scenic Southwest coast of Turkey. The team, now seasoned adventurers, had experienced many thrilling moments during their stay in the area; massive storms, breathtaking anchorages near ancient ruins, even an amateur archaeology project to enhance their experience. But this week’s episode takes excitement and adrenaline levels to new heights.
The previous month had been filled with unexpected challenges, yet this week seemed even more eventful than usual. In the morning, while Captain Kyle is taking a break, he casually mentions to his wife, Jordan, that he has taken a pregnancy test and it is positive. This piece of exciting news follows quickly on the heels of their daughter, Isabella, falling ill with what seems like a viral infection.
The family finds themselves now looking for an English-speaking pediatrician in a rural part of Turkey. When their daughter’s health stabilizes but doesn’t fully recover, Captain Kyle and his crew decide to stick around the town of Gocek longer than they originally planned. They reserve another two nights at the marina and prepare to face new challenges.
In a daring turn of events, as they’re gearing up for their trip north, a massive military exercise begins to unfold near their location. The Turkish warships, including submarines, appear to be conducting training exercises in the surrounding waters. It becomes clear that Atticus’ path is not just dangerous but also restricted.
Captain Kyle does his best to navigate through this minefield, making several attempts at reaching out and coordinating a safe route with the warship. The situation is tense yet also slightly amusing as Captain Kyle tries to get the message across and make clear that Atticus is simply trying to sail safely through the exercise area.
The crew of Atticus takes advantage of the break in action after navigating past the Turkish warship to marvel at their surroundings. The Southwestern coast offers breathtaking views and calm anchorages. Even amidst the tension, Captain Kyle notes that this stretch is one of their favorites during their time in Turkey.
In the end, they continue sailing along the beautiful coastline and set anchor in a new, isolated bay – further away from potential military exercises. The crew embraces this new challenge, with Captain Kyle taking time to appreciate the natural beauty around them and reflecting on their journey thus far.
This adventure-filled episode showcases yet another of many experiences where Captain Kyle must make decisions to protect his family. Though the situation could have been a tense and scary one, it turned out to be an exhilarating moment filled with laughter, shared challenges, and incredible natural beauty.
The team’s excitement and sense of adventure remain high. Next week they continue their journey – staying strong amidst adversity, celebrating new life, and exploring more breathtaking coastlines around the globe. Sailing around the world introduces a lot of excitement into our lives and it feels like every week something memorable happens. And the past month that we’ve spent sailing the South West coast of Turkey has been even more eventful than usual. Storms, beautiful anchorages, ancient ruins, and my difficult yet noble journey of becoming an amateur adventurer archeologist…
But this week we experience way more excitement than normal. But excitement can be both good and bad, and when our daughter gets really sick we find ourselves looking for a pediatrician who speaks english in a rural part of Turkey. And just when we think the excitement is over, we find ourselves being chased down by a warship in the middle of a massive military exercise.
