To seal our new companionway sliding hatch we decided on using West Systems Special Clear Hardener. This will offer a long lasting, durable seal, protecting the wood from weathering caused by water, while working simultaneously as a strong base for our polyurethane UV resistant clear topcoat. The primary downside to using epoxy as a sealer seems to be the difficulty of removal, which is only a problem if the UV topcoat is not regularly replaced over time. We are hoping with a good application, and proper preparation, this system will outlast conventional varnish systems.
