Ep 261 | The Torture Continues! Uncovering Hidden Damage

Welcome to Episode 261 of the Sailing Parlay Revival series, where we dive into another day of hard work and challenging tasks on our boat. If you recall from last week’s episode, we faced a major setback when the decks on our bow ripped up while sailing our Spica. Despite that adversity, we managed to glue them back down using epoxy. This week, the real hard work begins as we tackle hidden damage caused by saltwater infiltration. As the wet water worked its way inside, we knew it was essential to address this issue promptly and thoroughly before proceeding with our circumnavigation journey. The Uncovering of Hidden Damage:As the epoxy glue hardened on the port side, we turned our attention to the starboard side and began grinding in preparation for reinforcing it with fiberglass. We soon realized that saltwater had found its way between layers of glass, traveling through wet core along the hull. The Problem Areas:Upon inspection, we discovered a significant issue in one corner where water had infiltrated, creating damage between two layers of fiberglass. As we ground deeper into the area, more problems surfaced, including open holes with wet foam that traveled even further down the hull.Creating a Repair Plan:To address these extensive issues and create a plan for repairs, we decided to measure the extent of the damaged areas. We made a detailed cutting list to accurately determine each piece of glass required for fixing and reinforcing the bow section. The Repair Process:With the necessary materials ready, we began rolling out the fiberglass on both sides using TotalBoat epoxy mixed with chopped mat B and woven roving. In areas where the foam was wet and damaged, we first applied thickened epoxy to fill any gaps or hard edges before proceeding.By following this meticulous process and adhering to our carefully created plan, we were able to effectively reinforce each problem area with a significant number of layers in some cases. Our dedication to achieving perfection was evident as we worked non-stop on these challenging tasks. Conclusion:In the end, our hard work paid off and left us with a considerably strengthened bow section that can withstand any future challenges during voyages. The repaired area now features additional layers of glassing, resulting in an incredibly strong bond that ensures no further issues will arise. While the process proved to be taxing on both our physical and mental capabilities, it allowed us to refine our skills and reinforce crucial areas beneath decks. Now, as we continue sailing around New Zealand’s eastern coast, you can feel confident knowing that the bow has been reinforced for maximum safety and reliability.Moving Forward:As we head into our next episode, we will recap some of the major events from this repair journey and share any additional thoughts on boat maintenance. Additionally, we’ll discuss new challenges ahead and what it takes to persevere through difficult situations while sailing across vast oceans.Remember to like, subscribe, and join us for more exciting episodes of Sailing Parlay Revival as we explore various repair techniques and overcome obstacles along our journey around the world.
The nightmare conitnues on parlay as we open up a whole can of worms with water ingress between layers of fibreglass in the hull of the boat. We start to have flashbacks of all the balsa core we had to remove out of the boat in Guatemala...

SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!
