Two Critical Upgrades to Stop Your Boat from Sinking
In the previous episode, we showcased the installation of Cyclops load sensors, which proved quite interesting for everyone involved. If you haven’t seen that one yet, feel free to go back and check it out.
Introducing Composite Through-Hulls: The Way of the Future
This week, we’re diving into why composite through-hulls are not only a permanent feature in your boat but also ensure you won’t have to replace them repeatedly. These upgrades are crucial for maintaining the safety and reliability of your vessel.
Solving the Escape Hatch Issue: A Lifesaving Upgrade
We’ll also be addressing the problematic nature of Escape hatches, which have been known to cause water ingress and, in some instances, sink quite a few boats over the years. Our solution involves making the hatch more robust and reliable, ensuring it’s less likely to fail during rough conditions.
The Journey So Far
From Hurricane damage to broken bulkheads, and even being struck by lightning not once but twice, the Parlay Revival team has experienced their fair share of challenges. Despite these setbacks, they’ve transformed their Lagoon 450 into one of the strongest and fastest boats on the planet, sailing a remarkable 25,000 miles in pursuit of their goal to circumnavigate the globe.
Critical Steps for Installation
- Create a detailed diagram of all through-hulls being replaced.
- Organize and track each component to ensure accurate placement during installation.
- Familiarize yourself with the proper use of tools and materials needed for this project.
Key Benefits of Composite Through-Hulls
- Constructed from a combination of fiberglass (30%) and nylon (70%), making them exceptionally durable and resistant to corrosion.
- Precisely engineered to provide watertight seals, ensuring the safety and integrity of your boat at all times.
Importance of Securing the Escape Hatch
The Escape hatch, while necessary for emergency situations like capsizing or flipping, poses a significant risk if not properly secured. Our solution involves using more robust materials and additional brackets to reinforce the hatch, ensuring it remains watertight under even the most challenging conditions.
Making It Permanent
With these critical upgrades in place, you can rest assured that your boat’s through-hulls and Escape hatch will no longer be potential weak points. The composite materials ensure longevity, while the reinforced hatches provide added safety and peace of mind during your adventures on the open water.
Next Steps
Ahead lies further work in completing all through-hull installations and finalizing other crucial repairs and upgrades. With dedication and perseverance, Parlay Revival is determined to ensure their vessel remains safe and reliable for the rest of their journey around the globe.
In this episode we install all new TruDesign composite thru-hulls and get rid of all bronze out of the boat. We also reinforce our escape hatches after hearing of yet another boat lost due to this questionable feature. We also have major fuel issues on our main engine, and also go through the steps of applying propspeed, so an action packed episode indeed!!
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!
