In an unprecedented attempt, Sailing Nahoa embarked on a 300-mile offshore journey to Malel Island – a destination so treacherous that it’s only been seen by the handful. As part of their South Pacific Crossing mission, they decided this was worth stopping by for.
Nestled 300 miles away from Colombia’s coastline, lies an uncharted piece of paradise – Malel Island. This UNESCO Heritage site isn’t monitored for immigration or other amenities. It’s solely recognized due to its extraordinary marine life.
With over 40,000 nautical miles sailed in their journey around the world, including 38 countries, this adventurous family knows how to push boundaries. The open ocean can be both challenging and beautiful; yet there are unique spots like Malel Island that offer more than meets the eye.
In their attempt to sail near this mystical island, they stumble upon unexpected encounters. The local Colombian authorities, part of the National Parks of Colombia, oversee this area strictly to protect its biodiversity.
The team discovers this UNESCO heritage site is home to an array of wildlife, including hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, and silky sharks. Despite the risks involved, it’s places like these that make their adventure truly remarkable.
Being able to circumnavigate Malel Island adds an enriching educational aspect for the children aboard. They learn firsthand about marine biology and respect for our environment, something not easily replicated.
This adventure pushes Sailing Nahoa further into the unknown. After a brief encounter, they set off on their path to French Polynesia, about 26 days away from this point.
To replicate a journey similar to theirs, preparation is key. Proper charts and navigation tools are essential, along with necessary permits from authorities like those they met in Malel Island.
Join Sailing Nahoa‘s extraordinary voyage and follow their progress as they continue on this thrilling Pacific adventure. Their next stop, French Polynesia – a land filled with more uncharted waters and exciting adventures.
If this epic journey has inspired you to set sail across the vast Pacific, make sure your preparation includes a comprehensive safety check, detailed charts, and essential sailing gear. Remember that venturing into uncharted territories comes with its own risks but also offers invaluable experiences like those witnessed on Malel Island.
