We Left our Boat in the Tropics. Here's what we Found!

A Sailing Odyssey with SV NAHOA

Sailing around the world is a dream many harbor, but for Ben, Ashley, Willa, and Bodhi of SV NAHOA, it’s their reality. The Canadian family, hailing from Victoria, BC, has embraced an awe-inspiring global sailing adventure, covering an impressive 40,000 nautical miles over five extraordinary years.

Leaving Boat in the Tropics

Sailing is an adventure that takes the Canadian family of SV NAHOA around the world. After a remarkable journey spanning 40,000 nautical miles and exploring 35 countries, the family faced a new chapter: leaving their boat in the Caribbean for hurricane season.

Mold, Surprises, and a Reunion

As the crew returned after 2.5 months, the boat, once a haven, revealed the harsh reality of the tropics. Green mold had crept into corners, and black mold had found its way to hidden spots. Birds had left their mark, and surprises lurked beneath the deck. The pristine vessel they left behind was now a canvas painted by nature’s elements.

Challenges Unveiled

Detailed inspection exposed the toll the tropical climate took on their beloved boat. Decks, once immaculate, bore the marks of Boatyard dirt. A peculiar smell lingered, a blend of boat and perhaps a hint of paint. The crew identified a potential culprit—a misplaced bar of soap on the back deck. It wasn’t a disaster, but it was a reality check.

The Interior Resilience

Surprisingly, the interior stood strong against the tropical onslaught. Proactive measures, including leaving everything propped open for air circulation, proved effective. The inside looked promising, a silver lining amidst the external challenges. The dehumidifiers, strategically placed, had done their job, collecting moisture in their reservoirs.

Hunt for the Missing Keys

However, not everything was smooth sailing. The crew faced the age-old dilemma—where were the keys? A moment of self-praised cleverness turned into a search mission, hidden keys underneath the wind chandle. The relief of finding them mirrored the challenges and victories of life on the sea.

Boat Cleaning Rituals

Cleaning became a ritual, a labor-intensive but necessary process. Ben, spending half a day scrubbing bird droppings off the table and washing the deck, attested to the effort required to revive the boat. Yet, the family recognized that these were the tasks that came with the territory.

Preparing for the Next Chapter

With a deadline looming, the crew had two days to transform their boat from a tropical haven to a seaworthy vessel. Tasks included engine checks, sail adjustments, zinc changes, and a thorough wash. The clock was ticking, but the crew’s determination and experience propelled them forward.

Reflections on Boat Life

Returning to the boat was more than a routine; it was a homecoming. Ben reflected on the unique lifestyle they’ve chosen—where work seamlessly blends with life. The boat, with its limited space, represented not confinement but a nucleus where the family thrived together.

Looking Ahead

As the boat neared the water, anticipation filled the air. The family shared plans for the upcoming year, a slower-paced journey with time to enjoy the surroundings. The addition of Starlink technology, sports equipment, and the promise of using their gear marked a shift toward a more leisurely exploration.

Lessons Learned from Leaving Boat in the Tropics

Leaving a boat in the tropics is more than a logistical challenge; it’s a narrative of resilience, adaptation, and a testament to the symbiotic relationship between a family and their floating home. SV NAHOA, with its trials and triumphs, continues to sail, embracing the unpredictable but rewarding life on the sea.
