Will an expired liferaft float? What’s inside a life raft? How do you inflate a life raft? We ended up choosing to get a new one. There are many options to decide from. Some of our decisions were practical. Ben wanted to be able to sit up. We needed a small one as most of the time its just the two of us aboard. Other than that we found one that was from a trustworthy company and pulled the trigger. Ahem not the pull cord.
With the new one installed, we had to decide what to do with our old one. Since we weren’t comfortable using it ourselves, we couldn’t in good conscious sell it. We have been lugging around an extra raft for just around 7000 nautical miles. Finally we found the right day and place to give the old one a spin.
We have since bought a New Quality Life Raft from Viking: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GKCRJUA/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20
We are Very happy with our new purchase as it sits at our stern ready for deployment at a moments notice.
Another item we have ready at a moments notice is a Grab Bag. We can recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JQZF158/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20
We would not leave harbour without a Grab Bag.
Last but not least, we carry PLBs on our lifejackets: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003BQM058/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20
These three items make up our main safety net. Of course there are other items we carry with us at all times including:
1. A quality waterproof VHF in the Dinghy: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001PUA91Y/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20
2. Sound Device: Air Horn:
3. A few blood clotting pads when in shark territory: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001BCNTHC/?linkCode=as2&tag=nahoa-20
