When I found out that my MFD, Multi Functional Display from Raymarine was too old for their latest software and a new device would cost me € 4200.-, I decided to do some research on navigation tools, equipment and software.
Ofcourse the dedicated stuff from Furuno, Raymarine or Garmin work in all weather situations, on all boats and will not break during war, but what if I do not need all that? With software like SavyNavvy for mobile devices and Orca, who tries to sell their beneftis, also the mac/pc market offers software. Some (m.o.) packages look as if it’s upgrades from MSDOS to WIN, and other packages have a better GUI.
Some people say the OPENCPN is best, but to me it feels to much as if a programmer still has to finish it . “Tomorrow it is ready, I just have to fix some things.” I was manager of a crew of 25 programmers, so I still have nightmares of those guys.
I found a package with more benefits than disadvantages, so I picked that one as my first choice, and whilst using it, I really start liking it.
