Letting Go of Perfectionism: Sailing MV Lady Liselot’s Transformation
In the latest episode of Sailing MV Lady Liselot, Captain Hank Yan shares his journey towards finding the perfect balance between simplicity and functionality aboard his vessel. After quitting YouTube due to the overwhelming time commitment required for video editing, Hank listened to his audience’s feedback and made some incredible changes.
As we embark on this exciting new chapter with Captain Hank, we’ll witness his innovative solutions to navigate the seas efficiently while maintaining a captivating presence on social media. The story of Sailing MV Lady Liselot continues as we explore how simplifying his content creation process has not only benefited his fans but also revitalized Hank’s passion for sailing.
The Origin of the Transformation
Following the previous episode where Hank shared his reasons for quitting YouTube, fans from all over responded with one message in mind: simplify! Viewers urged Hank to eliminate complex graphics and focus on what they truly wanted – genuine glimpses into his sailing adventures. This feedback prompted a major shift in both Hank’s video production style and navigation setup aboard Lady Liselot.
Rethinking the Dashboard
As Hank contemplated his video editing woes, he also evaluated his navigation setup. He had a dashboard when purchasing Lady Liselot in 2012, featuring a Raymarine plotter. However, this old software only showed AIS targets without any additional information like names or speeds.
In one fateful encounter with an entrance operator at Stosa, Hank was reminded of the dangers that arose from miscommunication between his dashboard and the operator’s screens. This moment pushed him towards exploring new navigation solutions.
The Transition to Time Zero
Hank explored various options for navigation software, ultimately discovering ‘Time Zero’. Though this English software program seemed promising, it didn’t fit his specific needs. Through trial and error, he eventually found a Dutch supplier who provided the perfect solution.
Hank invested in two 17-inch, dimmable daylight screens to optimize visibility both day and night. To avoid wasting money on redundant technology, he kept his existing radar system from 2022, ensuring a streamlined and cost-effective solution.
The Evolution of Video Production
As part of his simplified approach to video creation, Hank opted against using complex graphics and music. Instead, he focused on creating authentic content that showcased his adventures aboard Lady Liselot. This new method not only reduced editing time but also maintained a genuine connection with his audience.

After a short break to reload, think things over, and re-invent myself as an YT producer, I am back. In episode 13 of Season 04 I told you that I would stop, since editing the video's the way I did was way to time consuming. First I had to find out if I even wanted to share my journey on YT anymore and if so, I had to find new ways in producing them. You blew my of my socks. I am overwhelmed with the enormous number of responses I got and the theme of every email, PM, DM and comment was: reload, stop what you do not want, start enjoying your life again and (then) come back.
It did not take me that long... Let me tell you why. Oh wait, that's the story of this video in which I also will inform you about gaining safety aboard Lady Liselot.

Cams aboard Lady Liselot. Check them out on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3P5jFxP (but the silly thing is: these https://amzn.to/3T1AYB2 almost are alike).
The 4 camera's I use to produce my outdoor footage, are so called PTZ - P(an) T(ilt) Z(oom). Zoom, I only use on the rear camera, when I am underway. As you have seen I use the pan and tilt a lot. And in the dark they produce a great (short view) infrared image. I even can navigate in a marina at night on my cams.
Since they all are so called "IP camera's", each have an unique (hardwired) IP address (no DNS) in my network.

This channel follows a format: "Join Henk-Jan, whilst he cruises on motorvessel Lady Liselot through The Netherlands and a little further". That's it. This automatically means: no boat tour and no boat jobs. These subjects do not fit the format. So, I aim to give you a feel for what life's like aboard for me and hope you enjoy it, perhaps relate to it or maybe even learn something. But it's simply my story and the way I do things. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nederlands.
