In today’s video, we continue our adventure as part of the new YouTube Wednesday series. This episode marks the start of a brand-new journey on the water that will showcase not only recent trips from cruising around the Netherlands but also a treasure trove of videos from past years waiting to be released. Who knows what secrets these old recordings hold!
In one of the previous episodes, we had tried calibrating our autopilot several times without success. However, it wasn’t until my latest cruise to Fleel that I found myself having to manually steer due to an issue with the autopilot failing to work. As such, today’s video focuses on determining if it is possible for me to get the autopilot properly calibrated.
To start calibrating, I begin with a few basic settings such as selecting my ship type and cruising speed. Although it took a few tries, I finally get the system working smoothly after following a series of steps. My autopilot starts to respond well, guiding me effortlessly through my favorite spots on the water.
I was faced with some difficulties initially regarding compass offsets. The autopilot showed a rather large limitation of 22 degrees on its display. After further troubleshooting, however, I decided that the best course of action was to go for a complete lap around Lake Cavel – as long as there were no obstructions in my way! In this instance, a lone red sailboat posed no threat to our journey.
The problem arose because there were two units connected in the system – one being the gray computer from the pilot itself, and another compass module called EV1. The issue seemed to be emanating from a potential disturbance in the magnetic field surrounding these components.
I eventually moved the EV1 to an upper cabinet on the flybridge, and the autopilot successfully managed a series of calibrations after just a few attempts. I was elated when my efforts were rewarded by having the autopilot work as intended throughout our sail across Lake Cavel.
As they say, happy sailor brings good luck. Having the autopilot work effectively after so much effort certainly proves this old maritime adage correct! This journey demonstrates that no matter how difficult the task at hand seems to be – perseverance and determination can lead you on a path towards success.
Our mission was accomplished as the end of this thrilling YouTube Wednesday video comes to a close. We learned that sometimes, a little patience and effort can lead us on an even smoother sail than we first anticipated.

This is a new series. If I succeed, I will publish my cruising video's on Saturday and "All the footage I did not publish yet, but still is on my drive" is for the YouTube Wednesday series.

Cams aboard Lady Liselot. Check them out on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3P5jFxP (but the silly thing is: these https://amzn.to/3T1AYB2 almost are alike).
The 4 camera's I use to produce my outdoor footage, are so called PTZ - P(an) T(ilt) Z(oom). Zoom, I only use on the rear camera, when I am underway. As you have seen I use the pan and tilt a lot. And in the dark they produce a great (short view) infrared image. I even can navigate in a marina at night on my cams.
Since they all are so called "IP camera's", each have an unique (hardwired) IP address (no DNS) in my network.

After so many attempts, will I be able to calibrate my AutoPilot? YTW 2024/01
This channel follows a format: "Join Henk-Jan, whilst he cruises on motorvessel Lady Liselot through The Netherlands and a little further". That's it. This automatically means: no boat tour and no boat jobs. These subjects do not fit the format. So, I aim to give you a feel for what life's like aboard for me and hope you enjoy it, perhaps relate to it or maybe even learn something. But it's simply my story and the way I do things. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nederlands.
