As the sun sets on their home port of Canavan, the Sailing Melody family sets sail for an epic journey around the globe. Their dream is to explore the vast oceans while keeping safety paramount and creating a cherished experience for their two young children.
Setting Sail from Canavan
In the episode titled ‘The Wrong Way to Sail Around the World! Setting Off AT LAST!!!!!!’, the family departs from their home port with great excitement and a touch of nerves. Their first voyage doesn’t aim for the vast oceans, but instead, they plan short distances up the coastline to test everything and familiarize themselves gradually.
A Safe Journey
Knowing that traversing the world with a 12-year-old child with a disability and an infant onboard is no small feat, they decide to take it slow and carefully plan their steps. Weather conditions play a crucial role in their decision-making process; only moving forward when the situation is deemed safe for everyone aboard.
Technical Preparation
To assist with navigation, the family uses a rugged DG tablet featuring the Navionics app. Its touch screen operates effectively even when wet, and its extended battery life proves valuable during long passages.
Practicing the Man Overboard Drill
The family practices a crucial safety procedure onboard – the man overboard drill. With expert Lee from RNLI aboard to guide them, they run through their protocols to ensure everyone knows what steps to take should such an unfortunate event happen.
Champagne Toast and Gratitude
Upon leaving Canavan, the family finally marks Ocean Melody’s entry into the open waters with a champagne toast. After being ashore for 10 years, Steel Melody (Ocean Melody) gets her well-deserved dip.
Navigating The Swellies
Having left Canavan, the family approaches the notorious area known as The Swellies. Located between Menai Bridge and Britania Bridge, this section of water can pose a challenge if not navigated properly. Using key landmarks and transits, they expertly maneuver Ocean Melody through.
Stop at Gazelle
The family arrives safely at the Gazelle bu Maris. With Lee, Gail, Melissa, Jack, and Ollie heading back to shore for the night while Andy and Lee remain onboard, preparations are made for their onward journey.
