In this episode we settle into a lovely few days in the gorgeous Helford River and start to tackle some of the things which needed attention after the rough ride of the last few days.
The Helford River is a scenic, tranquil estuary located in Cornwall, England, on the south coast, stretching about five miles inland from Falmouth Bay. Known for its stunning natural beauty and calm waters, the river meanders through wooded hills and picturesque villages, making it a popular spot for sailors, kayakers, and nature lovers.
1. Wildlife & Nature:
– The Helford River is a haven for wildlife, part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). You can find lush oak woodlands, wildflowers, and a variety of bird species. It’s also home to marine life like oysters, dolphins, and seals.
2. Sailing & Water Activities:
– The river is well-known for its calm, sheltered waters, making it ideal for sailing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. It offers several anchorages that are protected from the wind, making it a favorite for those looking for a peaceful spot to moor.
3. Historical and Cultural Significance:
– The Helford River area has a rich history. It was once a busy trading route for French wine and Cornish tin. Local landmarks include the ancient village of Helford, where thatched cottages line the shore, and Frenchman’s Creek, made famous by Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name.
4. Beaches and Creeks:
– Numerous small beaches and coves are accessible by boat or on foot, such as Durgan Beach and Tremayne Quay. Frenchman’s Creek and Port Navas are serene spots to explore, with Port Navas also being home to an old oyster farm.
5. Helford Passage:
– This is a popular village on the north shore of the river, known for its ferry service that connects it to Helford village on the south bank. The area features waterside pubs, coastal walks, and tranquil views of the river.
6. Environmental Efforts:
– The Helford River is part of conservation efforts to preserve its fragile ecosystem, including projects focused on marine habitats and local species like native oysters.
#Sailing and Anchoring in the Helford River:
The river is a top destination for boaters due to its sheltered anchorages and safe moorings. It’s surrounded by peaceful, secluded spots like Polgwidden Cove and Gillan Creek, where sailors can drop anchor and enjoy the serene environment.
