To Prevent The Mast Falling Down...

To Prevent The Mast Falling Down…

Welcome back to the third season of Sailing Magic Carpet! In our previous episode, we moved our Cape George 36 Cutter out of its old shed and into a new location where we can start working on important stuff.

Our plan is to have a sea trial this summer but not a full launch. So, our main priorities are the bow sprit, Mast, and engine. Before putting up the mast, there are some crucial components I need to install first.

The Nerve-Racking Task of Installing Chain Plates

When they moved the boat, they preferred not having the chain plates in place because they’re not permanently installed yet. They just have the top bolt on. My mission now is to put this in for good.

Following Expert Advice

In a previous video, I mentioned that I got the angles from Eddie Aarsen on Prince Edward Island who did a refit with Kirsten Nasha on Minahaha, also a Cape George Cutter 36. He sent me the angles they installed their chain plates at, and I’m very happy to follow the same angles.

Drilling Holes

Before shining up the hall, you can see that I scratched the surface a little bit to indicate where those holes are. Now, I can find the right angle again.

Finding The Right Angle

First one in should I go? It’s nerve-wracking, but wherever they come through, we’ll just have to deal with it. For now, I’m focusing on drilling the holes so that I can do all of them at once.

Installing The Chain Plates

Next is taking the oscillating multi-tool and cutting out the bolsa to then glue in a piece of G10. This will be more involved, but for now, I’m just drilling the holes.

The Right Location

One thing that I decided on myself was the location of where the holes were placed in the chain plates. We didn’t want to have anything go through this section, as this is where we have bull work, the deck, and then the beam shelf.

Nerve-Wracking Drilling

Drilling the holes was nerve-wracking because they also have an angle, making it hard sometimes to extrapolate and measure where the holes are going to end up on the inside.

Bending The G10

When I realized that the 3/4-inch thick G10 bars were impossible to bend, I came up with a solution of bending with the curves. It took some time but turned out fine.

The Next Step

The next step is making backing plates for the chain plates. Our hull is insulated with Balsa, and I need to dig it out and fill it with something that can take the compression of the carrier bolts.

Solar Generator Update

We decided to get a solar generator from Bluetti, which seemed like the one-stop solution for our electrical needs. We were grateful that Bluetti sponsored this to us.

Next Week’s Project

For next week’s episode, my dad is going to help with a project that I’m really looking forward to. He’ll be making cabinet doors out of some special wood for our boat.

The Importance Of Chain Plates

The chain plates are crucial to prevent the mast from falling down. We tackled this project while preparing our boat for a summer sea trial. Until next time, thank you all for your continued support.
