Sailing Around The World – Next Stop, St. Barths!

We couldn’t be more excited to share the next installment of our sailing adventure around the world! This time, we find ourselves in the gorgeous French Caribbean island of St. Barts (St. Barthelemy). Known for its stunning beaches, high-end restaurants, and exclusive vibes, there is plenty to explore and experience. So, without further ado, let’s dive into our week-long adventure on this glamorous island.

Arriving in Gustavia

Ahead of arriving in St. Barts, we completed the necessary online clearance paperwork. As for the helipad question on the form, I humorously answered no, wondering if our redneck family would fit in with St. Barts’ rich and famous crowd. Upon arrival, we quickly realized that any worries were unfounded as it’s just another ordinary Friday in paradise.

Exploring Gustavia

Daniel and Jack ventured to the Captain’s office for check-in procedures, and fortunately, everything went smoothly. Once cleared, we embarked on exploring the town of Gustavia, known as St. Barts’ Port Entry.

Hiking the Mountain

In true adventurous spirit, our family decided to tackle hiking up a mountain in St. Barts. While Oscar found out that the site was actually a police station and not open for visitors, we still had a wonderful time navigating the trails, taking in the breathtaking views.

Moving to Colombier Beach

After spending one night at Gustavia Anchorage, we sailed Machete to Colombier Beach, another beautiful slice of St. Barts paradise.

Next Stop – Guadeloupe

However, our adventure in St. Barts was not going to last too long. The forecast window required us to head out for our overnight passage to Guadeloupe, a short four-hour trip on our own boat.

To address the electrical winch’s issue, my dad attempted to tighten down the set screw in the main Harken block, crucial to keep it from twisting and chafing. Although we faced some challenges along the way, like a sporty sail due to wind gusts up to 24 knots, we sailed off into the sunset towards our next destination – Guadeloupe.

Overnight Passage to Guadeloupe

The Full Moon lit our way down to Guadeloupe as the winds died down from earlier, allowing us a peaceful 4-knot cruising speed. We all had our roles during this overnight passage, whether taking turns on the helm or napping in the cockpit.

Looking Ahead

As we sailed past a few of the islands we initially wanted to visit due to hurricane season concerns, we had our sights set on reaching Grenada and staying clear of potential storms.

Stay tuned for the exciting continuation of our sailing adventure as we navigate towards Guadeloupe, explore new beaches and cultures, and cherish unforgettable moments along the way!

This week Machete takes on St. Barths! Follow along as we stop in Gustavia, explore the town, go on a failure of a hike, and check out Colombier beach. Of course, something breaks and needs fixing, because... boat life!
