Haul Out in Grenada: Replacing Standing Rigging, Emergency Hatches, and More
After our decision to skip White Island due to an incoming storm, we found a haven at Windward Bay. This provided us with the perfect opportunity to explore nearby areas and make our way to Clark Court Marina for a long-overdue haul-out. It’s during this process that several essential maintenance tasks must be undertaken.Standing Rigging Replacement
One of the primary reasons for our haul-out was the need to replace our standing rigging. This critical component ensures the stability and structural integrity of the boat. Working with MSB rigging, a highly recommended local provider, we completed this essential work efficiently. Their professional approach made them an excellent choice if you’re in need of rigging services in Grenada.Emergency Hatches Regluing
While the standing rigging was a primary focus, we also seized the opportunity to address our emergency hatches. These had started to leak and were recalled due to incidents involving boats sinking when their windows fell out. The recall’s fix included adding metal brackets outside the windows. This modification significantly reduces the risk of losing a window completely. We undertook to reglue these hatches during the haul-out, taking precautions that not only address our immediate concern but also ensure long-term reliability and safety on board Machete.Salon Windows Rebedding
During our inspection, we noticed that our salon windows were in desperate need of rebedding. These windows lift completely from the boat’s frame, highlighting the urgency and importance of addressing this issue. Thanks to Camilo Creedwater for his expert services in rebedding all our salon windows.Exploring Grenada
Haul-out in a beautiful location like Grenada provides an opportunity not just for maintenance, but also exploration. The bustling activity within John Pierre Shipyard and the serene beauty of Rod Island were notable highlights.Machete’s Latest Fix
Following our splash-back into the water, Daniel couldn’t resist diving straight into another fix for Machete. The steering cable chain, found wanting in quality and performance over time, was replaced with a stainless option to prevent future rusting and maintenance challenges. While the work may seem overwhelming at times, each task contributes to ensuring Machete remains in top shape for our ongoing adventures. Our commitment to regular upkeep means fewer surprises on long journeys and more joy during our sailing escapades. So, as we sail onwards in this captivating Caribbean series, remember the importance of meticulous boat maintenance for your own journeys, whether you’re a seasoned sailor or just starting out.We make a stop in Carriacou and Ronde Island before hauling out at Clarks Court Marina. We get hauled out to replace our standing rigging, but while we are out of the water, we tackle a few other projects as well. Our salon windows finally get rebedded and we reseal our emergency hatches that had started leaking. We work on shining up Machete while giving the kids small projects to keep them occupied. It's a quick week living on the hard in Grenada.
