After completing several major projects on board Sailing Liberty, it’s time to turn our attention to our ground tackle setup – specifically the anchor swivel. As mentioned in part one of this series, we’ve received quite a bit of feedback from you, our wonderful audience, regarding our current anchor swivel system. So, without further ado, let’s explore how we can upgrade and optimize our anchor system to achieve what we like to call ‘the ultimate ground tackle.’

By addressing the concerns raised by our viewers and applying valuable advice from experienced sailors like you, we’ve taken significant steps towards creating a robust and reliable anchoring solution for Sailing Liberty. Today, we’ll be installing a new Mantis Swivel and a heavier duty shackle alongside some 5/8 chain to achieve a breaking strength of up to 20,000 lb. Additionally, we’ve incorporated two separate seizing wires for extra safety in a seaway.

Ultimate Ground Tackle Setup

To achieve the ultimate ground tackle setup for Sailing Liberty, we made sure to prioritize safety and durability:

• Mantis Swivel M2: This impressive swivel boasts a breaking strength of up to 20,000 lb – significantly stronger than our previous swivel system.
• 5/8 Chain: Increasing chain weight enhances holding power and increases durability against wave action. We’ve opted for a 300 ft length with a price tag of $1,260 (including the cutting fee).

After conducting extensive research and receiving input from seasoned sailors within our community, we chose this specific Mantis Swivel for its superior performance characteristics in high-wind conditions. This swivel significantly bolsters our confidence during anchor deployments.

• Install Teflon tape on threads for a secure fit.
• Tighten the connection using both hands for maximum stability.
• Utilize seizing wires on each end of the shackle to prevent any potential bolt loss during intense conditions at sea.
