Stormy night & a new collision : She wants to Sell the Boat!? Sailing remote Indonesia. Ep. 260

Sailing full time can be very challenging! There is so much out of our control, so much that can go wrong. Marie is feeling pretty upset during a very rough crossing from Sumbawa to Sulawesi, wondering why we are even doing this. Our 5 month old son Eli is on her mind and the potential danger we are putting him in. Very valid thoughts for a parent to have.
Sailing full time can also be very rewarding! Being in amazing unique places and witnessing the amazing nature. The culture differences with the people we meet and our own learning along the way. Overcoming challenges and feeling stronger because of it.
Its such a fine balance.
How long will it last?

Sailing Remote Indonesia: Stormy Nights and New Challenges Await

In this exhilarating episode, the Sailing Learning by Doing team sets off on a long-awaited journey to Sail remote areas of Indonesia. Despite initially smooth sailing under trade Runner’s sails, a series of storms and unexpected challenges put their skills and trust in each other to the test.

The Passage Begins

As they pull up anchor from Soba Island, their destination is Sauga Island, situated approximately 100 miles away. Despite putting a reef in the main sail to prepare for possible storms, little did they know that this passage would be far more challenging than anticipated.

A Wild Night at Sea

As the night unfolded, what was supposed to be an uneventful sail transformed into a harrowing experience with one squall after another. Winds reached up to 35 knots, making navigation and reef management essential to keep trade Runner steady. This constant barrage of storms made for a sleepless night but also strengthened their resolve as sailors.

Arriving in Sauga Island

Navigating through coral reefs and avoiding other boats, they finally drop anchor in Sauga Island. While initially relieved to have completed the crossing safely, unforeseen events left them questioning their decision-making and trust in Indonesian navigational skills.

Confrontation with an Indiscriminate Ferry

The episode takes a tense turn when a large ferry seemingly ignores standard protocols, nearly colliding with trade Runner. The sailors’ concerns about the ferry’s navigation skills and adherence to logic were put front and center in this encounter.

A Learning Experience

The team acknowledges their personal growth during the episode, both in their skills as sailors and as parents. Their priority remains to showcase their journey’s positives while addressing their doubts and fears. This incident underscores the importance of preparedness and caution when sailing through uncharted territories.

A Brighter Side: Exploring Sauga Island

In the midst of their adventure, a brief but heartwarming interlude occurs when the family explores Sauga Island. They engage with locals and discover the island’s self-governed fisheries, adding another layer to their experience.

Reflecting on Their Journey

In conclusion, Sailing Learning by Doing reflects on the lessons learned from this leg of their voyage. While they remain focused on embracing new experiences and challenges, the unexpected encounters at sea do leave them with a moment of self-doubt. They remind viewers that despite the ups and downs, the beauty of remote islands and their adventure-filled sailing journeys keep drawing them forward.

Join this daring family on more exciting adventures by tuning in to ‘Sailing Learning By Doing.’
