Trade Runner Sails to Remote Indonesia, Visiting Epic Waterfall

In this exciting episode, the family from Sailing Learning By Doing continues their adventures in remote Indonesia. Setting sail on Trade Runner, a 39 ft Crowther windspeed catamaran, they head to Moo Island in search of one of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls – Mat Jitsu. The Journey Begins The family starts their adventure by sailing from the mainland of Sumbawa, Indonesia to Moo Island. As they set sail, they encounter a change in wind direction and head straight into 15-knot winds on the nose. However, Trade Runner handles the conditions like a pro. Arriving at Moo Island The family arrives on Moo Island and is greeted by stunning natural beauty, including a soccer field that has seen little action. After navigating through a village of local residents and a loud motorbike or two, they head up to the famous Mat Jitsu waterfall. The Hike to the Waterfall The family sets out on their hike with baby Eli in tow. They find that the journey is a bit longer than they remember, but the weather and conditions are perfect. Along the way, they encounter friendly local wildlife like goats lounging on rooftops. The Arrival at Mat Jitsu After a 2-hour hike through stunning scenery, the family reaches the Mat Jitsu waterfall. The sight is breathtaking and they are thrilled to find the water invitingly warm after their long trek. They spend time enjoying the beauty of the waterfall and swimming in the crystal clear waters. The Challenges of Traveling with a Baby The family faces several challenges on this adventure, primarily due to having an infant along. Some of their worries include the long hike, the heat and sun exposure, finding a way to carry Eli safely through the jungle track, as well as making sure that the baby is comfortable and fed throughout the journey. Overcoming Hurdles The family demonstrates an incredible amount of adaptability, making impromptu diaper changes with just a cotton fabric belt and ensuring that they carry all the necessary items. They prove that traveling with a young child can be an amazing adventure as long as the right steps are taken. Looking to the Future The family acknowledges that adventures like this will change with Eli’s growing age, but they embrace each moment as it comes. Big Buff Head is proud of how well everyone managed the challenges on this trip and looks forward to many more incredible journeys. Support the Journey Sailing Learning By Doing offers a big thank you to their sponsors for making these adventures possible, and asks for continued support from patrons. As they continue their travels, more incredible destinations await them in this breathtaking corner of the world.
An epic sail followed by an epic adventure in family. This is what life is all about. A 30nm sail in pretty calm seas with 15kts of wind is what makes my smile wide. Trade Runner gets along so well even though I was running a very conservative sail plan. Our destination was Moyo Island and its very famous yet totally unknowen Mata Jitu Waterfall. Not many people vist here as its on a pretty remote part of Sumbawa but its most famous visitor is Princess Diana, back in 1993. The locals have called it the "Princess Di" falls ever since. (La Vagabonde of YouTube fame also visited last year). Its a good old hike from the anchorage up to the waterfall and most will pay a local lad to drive them up on the back of a scooter but we need exercise so we legged it for nearly 2 hours. Our first land adventure with our young son, and we had few doubts about it but everything went so good. So worth it as the cold water swim felt amazing and we'd earned it !
We are so happy that Eli is strong enough that we can take him on these sorts of adventures aready.
Enjoy!

Sailing through the Kabui Passage is a bit nerve wracking as it's super narrow, has big sharp cliffs on either side and the current can run either way up to 5 knots. It is a big shortcut and it is a very beautiful river-like cruise if you have the courage....
