Discover Labengki Island: A Paradise Unearthed

In Episode 265 of ‘Sailing Learning By Doing’, Vernon Ditcham and his family take us on a breathtaking journey to one of the most stunning hidden gems – Labengki Island. Join them as they explore this untouched paradise among the towering mountains. An Unforgettable Adventure After conducting extensive research on Google Earth, Vernon set his sights on Labengki Island, concerned about finding a suitable place to anchor. The island’s two long, finger-like bays offered great protection from swell and wind but were quite deep, right up to the fringing reef in the jungle. The Perfect Spot Undeterred by these initial challenges, Vernon and his family set off on their expedition, arriving at Labengki Island just in time for lunch. They began their search for the ideal anchorage and found what they were looking for – a secluded corner of the bay with optimal protection from the wind. A Jungle Paradise Upon arrival, they quickly settled in, reversing their dinghy right up to the edge of the reef and securing a 40-meter floating rope to a large rock on the fringe of the jungle. It truly felt like a paradise found. Unexpected Weather The weather that day was nothing short of extraordinary, but as is often the case in these remote island locations, the heavens soon opened up. In true ‘learning by doing’ fashion, Vernon and his family welcomed the rain, realizing they had come prepared with a well-stocked fresh water supply. Their patience was rewarded when, amidst the rain, they spotted an enchanting rainbow – one of the smallest they’d ever seen. An Adventurous Day Out With a day full of adventure ahead of them, Vernon and his family packed their essentials – food, water, masks, snorkels, drone, camera gear, and all that a baby might need. Their mission? To explore the hidden wonders of Labengki Island. The Secret Lagoon While sailing along, Vernon spotted a jetty on the island and upon further research using satellite maps, he discovered a secret lagoon hidden behind a wall. With excitement bubbling over, they set out to explore the incredible haven. Stunning Underwater Discoveries The underwater world surrounding Labengki Island is nothing short of mesmerizing. As Vernon and his family snorkeled in the crystal-clear waters, they came across a variety of fish, including travali, barracuda, and other species. They were especially amazed by the lush coral formations and rock structures. Natural Wonders The birdlife surrounding this incredible pool was truly impressive. As Vernon explored with his drone, he discovered yet another hidden pool within the island’s dense forest, showcasing the breathtaking natural beauty of Labengki Island. Night-time Captures In a bid to capture Labengki’s captivating essence even at night, Vernon turned to his drone. He set it for an 8-second exposure and used underwater lights on Trade Runner as well as a spotlight in the jungle behind them. The result? Stunning, never-before-seen aerial photos of this idyllic paradise. An Unforgettable Experience Vernon and his family’s journey to Labengki Island is an unforgettable tale of exploration, determination, and discovering nature’s hidden gems. The island, with its towering mountains and crystal-clear waters, promises a unique and adventurous getaway for those seeking a true escape from the everyday. Your Next Adventure As Vernon concludes this incredible episode of ‘Sailing Learning By Doing’, he reflects on the support from his loyal viewers and reminds us that together, we can make living the sailing dream a reality. So grab your camera gear, pack those essentials, and set sail to explore your own hidden paradise.
Sailing to a small remote island this week. The island is called Labengki and it looks epic! Anchoring was a big challenge but after a thorough search we found a location that worked well for us. The heavens opened soon after we arrived though and the rain didnt let up for close on 4 days. Our patience was rewarded though as we scored a stunner of a day to explore our surroundings. We didnt see anyone else in the whole time we were there and loved the isolated and tranquil week.
Enjoy
