In this exciting episode, we delve into the challenges of finding and anchoring in tight spots while sailing. Join us as we navigate through the Bon Strait, between the Bon Island and Mauna Island, where we stumbled upon an incredibly scenic location with just enough space to drop anchor. This is what adventure and exploration are all about!
The beauty of the secluded lagoon beckoned us, offering a unique challenge – anchoring tightly amidst rock walls and sandy shores. With only 5 meters of depth and no room to swing a traditional 30-meter line, we had to think outside the box. The plan was simple: drop the anchor on one side, pull back slightly, and secure with a floating rope tied to a coral outcrop.
The team prepared the dingy and essential gear, readying ourselves for the anchor placement. Maria would ensure precise control while I tied off the rope. With baby Eli onboard, added pressure made every move crucial. The team managed skillfully amidst a minor tantrum from Eli, capturing this tight spot anchorage on camera.
Upon reaching the anchorage site, I carefully tied the floating rope to a coral outcrop, ensuring minimal chafing. Tensioning both ropes, we secured our position in the lagoon. Relying on my previous experience, the weight of the anchor chain provided natural elasticity, allowing us to navigate forwards and backwards while staying centered.
The pristine location offered complete solitude, with only the sounds of nature filling the air. This serene spot exemplified why we choose sailing over urban noise and clutter. Eli proved to be a trooper, enjoying the quiet surroundings while his parents ensured a secure anchorage.
Relaying on Navionic, a common Indonesian navigation aid, showcased its limitations in our anchorage. Without proper depth and local knowledge, we would have missed this incredible spot. Relying instead on downloaded offline maps and local expertise led to a safe and secure anchoring experience.
In conclusion, this anchorage proved that tight spots are navigable with careful planning and technique. The key is to think outside the box – in our case, using floating ropes for secure positioning. Adventure awaits in these secluded gems, just waiting for intrepid sailors like you.
