Anchoring FAILS, 5 in a day⚓️ We are getting desperate! Ep 265
July 20, 2024 by Sailing Learning By Doing | Language: EN Play Time: 00:18:33 | SAILING YOUTUBERS

In the latest episode of Sailing Learning by Doing, hosts [Hosts Names] set out on a journey filled with unexpected challenges while trying to find suitable anchorage spots along the South Lai coast. Their desperate search for a secure location to drop anchor takes an amusingly tense and relatable turn as they navigate through numerous setbacks.
Episode 265 Recap: Anchoring Fails
The hosts start their quest in an area known for its beautiful surroundings, but also for being a challenging spot to find anchorage. Using satellite maps, they identify potential locations that seem promising at first glance.
First Attempt
In the first of several attempts, they explore a spot on the edge of Lai Island. Using their depth gauge to assess potential anchoring options, they discover that 36 meters of depth is not suitable for dropping anchor. This setback only fuels their determination as they continue searching for a better option.
Moving On
Unfazed, the hosts move on to explore other potential anchorage sites along the coastline. Each location presents new challenges and unexpected discoveries as they navigate through the intricate network of islands and reefs. The hosts showcase their problem-solving skills in this series of trials, each one more comical and desperate than the last.
Exploring Hidden Gems
Navigating through a maze-like coastline dotted with numerous small islands, they stumble upon hidden gems that could potentially be perfect anchorages. However, as excitement builds up, they quickly realize the locations are either too deep or have shallow waters and rocky bottoms.
Desperation Sets In
The frustration starts to set in, especially as they reach their fifth attempt at finding the perfect anchorage spot. Their desperation becomes apparent as they begin contemplating an overnight passage out to sea or going back to their starting point.
“We left at 9:00 this morning thinking there would be many options. We’ll probably only go five miles, find a spot and anchor.”
One Last Try
In an unexpected twist, the hosts decide to make one last attempt at finding an anchorage spot. They follow their intuition and find themselves on a small island near the coastline. As they explore further, they discover a secluded location that seems like it could be the perfect place to drop anchor.
The Perfect Spot
The hosts discover a hidden paradise where they can finally let their anchor down and rest. The stunning location, despite having some drawbacks in terms of safety, offers an idyllic spot to relax after the long day of searching.
“It’s not the safest one we’ve ever had but it is visually one of the best.”
Lessons Learned
This episode serves as both entertainment and an educational lesson in boating and anchoring. It highlights the importance of patience, persistence, and flexibility when searching for a safe place to anchor.
“Sometimes beautiful places are a bit challenging to find that spot to stop.”
Thank You & Goodbye
The episode concludes with gratitude towards their viewers for their support, even in challenging times. They remind viewers to continue watching and sharing their adventures.
We set sail from our beautiful Anchorage at Labengke island thinking it would be a pretty easy day. We had researched the islands ahead and picked out 5-6 potential anchor spots using satellite imagery.
One after another they turned out to be not good. Too deep, to close to the reef, exposed to wind, rocky bottom, they all just didnt work.
When you are sailing in a region that not many other sailors visit and there is no information in guide books or digital apps then you just have to go and find out for yourself.
It was a very long day and we were all totally worn out and facing a night passage when I decided to try one last spot.
Did it work out?
