⛵️SAILING Off-Grid in the BEST Places (Gorillas & Dinosaurs) | Hallberg Rassy 352

In today’s episode, we’re sailing the Grenadines which could easily be mistaken for French Polynesia. We walk in blistering hot sun to the customs office to check in and mingle with some locals, one of whom even gives us a few papayas from his yard.

We explore a failed and abandoned Marina Village project next to our anchorage before getting caught in a pretty scary storm. However, we manage to leave it off at a bougie private resort while eating pizza where I do a little dance to show just how fancy we are. Later on, back to chores a water fight ensues; obviously, I am victorious and feeling great until the end won’t start.

Stunning Sailing Destinations & Off-Grid Experiences

We’ve just left Carrikou Island in Grenada and are heading back up north to the Grenadines where our very first visitors will be joining us on Joko in a couple of weeks. Our sailing journey, while typically not adhering to schedules, includes a stop at Palm Island, but upon experiencing stronger conditions for the second half of our sail, we opt for Frig Bay on the south side of Union Island for better protection.

Paradise Found: Frig Bay on Union Island

We arrive at picturesque Frig Bay and are immediately in awe of our surroundings. We’ve stumbled across literal Paradise, which includes exploring Ashton Lagoon – a failed marine project turned eco-restoration success story.

A Visit to the Customs Office & Locals

To ensure we’re following all procedures, we set off to Clifton on Union Island where customs and immigration are. The adventure involves a local bus ride – quite an experience! We make it to the customs office just in time before they close for the day and meet some wonderful locals who even give us papayas.

Sailing & Stormy Weather in the Grenadines

A scary storm hits our sailing adventure near an abandoned Marina Village project, which sets a thrilling tone for this episode. As we seek shelter at a luxurious resort for safety reasons, it’s both exhilarating and nerve-wracking.

Beautiful Union Island – The Off-Grid Lifestyle

We capture breathtaking views of Union Island from our sailing journey, experiencing its rugged and beautiful peaks while also exploring abandoned projects that have been reborn through eco-restoration. This off-grid island life has taught us a lot about balancing adventure with respect for the natural environment.

Enjoying the Luxuries of the Marina Life

We briefly indulge in luxury at Canaan’s Sandy Lane Yacht Club and Marina, trying out local eateries like Shenanigans Bar and enjoying stunning views. Despite preferring off-grid sailing experiences, we do appreciate some ‘bougie’ moments when visiting marinas.

Sailors’ Chores & Maintenance

During our time on Union Island and subsequent sailing to other islands, we deal with boat maintenance issues such as watermaker malfunctions. We find creative solutions while continuing our journey across these beautiful Caribbean isles.

The Joy of Off-Grid Living & Sustainable Practices

Throughout this episode, we witness firsthand how the community on Union Island values sustainability through their involvement in the Ashton Lagoon restoration project. This experience teaches us more about eco-restoration and why it’s so important to the health of marine ecosystems.

Embracing Adventure & Challenges

The highlight of this episode revolves around the unpredictability of sailing life in the Caribbean, from facing storms to dealing with unexpected maintenance issues on our boat. Despite these challenges, we continue to explore uncharted territories and immerse ourselves fully into each new experience.

The Perfect Conclusion for Off-Grid Sailors

We end this episode by reflecting on the unforgettable experiences of exploring remote islands in the Grenadines, meeting incredible local people, and partaking in some much-needed luxury at marinas. For us, off-grid living truly means appreciating every moment of our adventures.
