Sailing to Dominica: The Good, Bad & Ugly – 72-Hour Adventure with Hallberg Rassy 352

Join Christen and Jeff, a couple with zero boating experience when they bought their vintage Hallberg Rassy 352 sailboat five years ago. Since then, they have been cruising (or doing boat work in tropical places) across the Caribbean sea, making memories along the way.

The Journey Begins from St. Pierre

With their trusty autopilot and a third crew member ‘driving’ the boat, Christen and Jeff sail out of St. Pierre on their way to Dominica. The anticipation of their 72-hour journey ahead is palpable.

A Storm Approaches

Just as they get into their stride, a rainstorm comes rolling in. Christen and Jeff use this time to do a shout-out to Christen’s dad for his birthday. This gesture is proof of how sailing far away from home can affect individuals.

Navigating Through Rough Seas

After the rainstorm, they face some tough times with strong winds making it a bumpy sail. But eventually, things start looking up when they sight beautiful surroundings such as mountains covered in clouds, and picturesque houses atop hills.

Anchoring at St Pierre

Upon reaching their destination – a city destroyed by an eruption of Mount Pelée in 1902, Christen and Jeff anchor down for the night. They make time to explore local sights before setting off on day two of their journey.

The Crossing to Dominica

On Day Two, they head north to St Pierre where they spend the night before setting off for Dominica. They discuss their expectations about wind and sea conditions during this leg of the journey.

The Gnarly Passage

The much-awaited sail to Dominica begins. However, it becomes a harrowing experience as they encounter fierce winds and stormy weather. They decide on slowing the boat down by reefing sails, hoping to make it safely across.

Jeff Takes Charge

While Christen is incapacitated with sickness, Jeff takes charge at the bow of the boat, keeping Joko under control amidst the treacherous waves. A loud bang against the side of their sailboat only adds to their troubles.

Finally – Dominica

After overcoming a harrowing 36-mile sail, Christen and Jeff finally arrive at Dominica. Despite the tough times, their spirits remain high, ready to explore more adventures aboard their vintage sailboat.

Looking Back

Their 72-hour journey from St Pierre to Dominica wasn’t all smooth sailing but it certainly tested their resilience. Despite facing strong winds, gnarly sea conditions and bouts of sickness, Christen and Jeff persevered, creating memories along the way.

A Message to Patrons

Lastly, a message thanking their patrons who make it possible for Christen and Jeff to keep sharing their dream with everyone. If you’d like to join the Joko crew too, click on the link below.
