Provisioning For Six Months in the Caribbean | Sailing Joco’s Big Shopping Trip
Sailing enthusiasts Chris and Jeff from Sailing Joco embarked on a provisioning journey to stock up their 40-year-old sailboat for six months living in the Caribbean. Watch along as they navigate the process from anchor to shopping to meal planning, discussing if their trip was hit or miss.Sailing Joco’s Caribbean Provisioning Experience
The pair began their journey in St. Anne, where the provisioning stores were located several miles away from their anchor spot. To streamline the process, they decided to bring their boat into town, making it a quick dinghy ride back and forth. They methodically visited multiple grocery stores throughout the day to find the best deals and catch the stores before closing at noon on Sundays.Savvy Shopping Strategies
While out shopping, Chris and Jeff were smart about their choices. They looked for non-perishable items that would last longer during their six-month stay, like canned goods and dried beans. This was especially important given the higher costs of supplies in the Caribbean compared to places like Bonaire.Necessary Purchases for Boat Life
The couple made necessary purchases such as a pressure cooker. This high-quality metal appliance was essential for their vegetarian cooking and would save money in the long run by buying dried ingredients rather than canned items. They even planned ahead by purchasing a spare o-ring seal, demonstrating their preparedness.Essential Items and Snacks
Other essential items included baguettes for daily lunches and sweets like chocolate croissants to satisfy their cravings. They also indulged in local delicacies, such as the fried dough balls called acas with codfish and spinach.Relaxation Break at a Local Beach
After a day of rigorous shopping, Chris and Jeff took time to relax on the beach with their new provisions. They discovered unique local sights like sugarcane fields and people selling fish on the side of the road. Despite the exhausting effort, they felt accomplished as they made their way back towards town.Provisioning Success
Overall, Chris and Jeff’s provisioning trip was successful despite facing challenges such as certain items being unavailable or harder to find. They managed to secure essential food items and supplies while taking advantage of good deals on their must-haves. While living in the Caribbean for an extended period may require adapting to higher prices, strategic shopping can alleviate some of that financial stress. By focusing on non-perishables and looking for discounts where possible, Chris and Jeff were able to successfully stock up Joco for six months without breaking the bank.We sailed all the way to a French Island to stock up on goodies to last us the next 6 months in the southern Caribbean. Can we do it ?! (Of course we can - otherwise we’d starve. But anyway!!! Thanks for watching!😜)
