Welcome back for more marine adventures with us, Kristen and Jeff of Sailing Joco! Today, we dive into repairing our trusty Halberg Rassy 352’s sprayhood, sharing insights into boat maintenance that even first-time boaters like us can understand. Buckle up as we walk you through every detail of this repair journey.
Sitting in our cockpit, surrounded by crystal-clear Caribbean waters, the need for a sturdy sprayhood becomes abundantly clear. However, as we unfold and examine our sprayhood, we realize that it’s more than just an accessory – it’s a necessity requiring attention.
Having left Joko on the hard for protection during the unpredictable weather conditions of the pandemic, we faced tarp-induced damage along our sprayhood’s sides. With worn stitching and chafe marks that seemed only to worsen over time, it was clear a repair was necessary.
The first step in this endeavor was not just diving into repairs – no, we knew we needed to clean it up. Dirt had accumulated during its time on deck, and we didn’t want that hindering our repair efforts. Once cleaned, we were ready to proceed with applying patches.
Utilizing sewing skills honed over time on Joko, from hatch covers to Jerry can covers, we began the patch work. With a mix of excitement and nervousness (adding patches might seem counterintuitive for repair), we went ahead. The Zipper on one side was threatening to give way entirely, making a chore of a repair not just advisable but necessary.
After much hard work and a bit of creative sewing, the repairs seemed to hold up under our test of a gentle rain shower. The patches were holding firm, blending in color-wise with the rest of the sprayhood, proving functionality hadn’t taken a backseat to aesthetics.
From zero experience to tackling our fourth major repair on Joko, we’re constantly learning – improving. Our confidence in handling more complex marine repairs has grown exponentially over the past five years, reflecting not just on our boat’s appearance but also its reliability and safety.
Never resting on our laurels, Kristen and Jeff immediately shifted gears from repairs to adventure. Our first official tour in Dominica – a jungle cruise up the Indian River – introduced us to more wonders of this island paradise.
Our guide, Albert, shared local wisdom and lore, making our journey all the more enriching. From the volcanic history of Dominica to the fascinating fauna and flora we encountered, it was an eye-opening experience.
In this episode, we’ve shown how repairs and maintenance go hand-in-hand with our love for sailing adventures. The community of fellow cruisers is always there to offer a helping hand, proving once again that the cruising community is indeed amazing.

When something is broken on the boat, we fix it .. OR AT LEAST TRY TO! Living an unconventional life on the water you’ve gotta learn to repair things yourself - and be creative. It may not be pretty but IT’LL WORK !!!
