BUILDING A MASSIVE DIY PERGOLA FOR OUR ABANDONED JUNGLE PROPERTY!

Building a massive DIY pergola for your abandoned jungle property may seem like an intimidating task, but with the right knowledge and tools, it’s entirely doable. Join the Sailing Good, Bad, and Ugly crew as they embark on this exciting project and share their tips and tricks along the way.

Materials and Preparation

Before starting the build, ensure you have all the necessary materials and tools. The team opted for 8×8 posts for their initial setup but switched to lighter 6×6 posts for the remaining parts of the project. They also used cement bases, a hammer drill, a carbide bit, a chainsaw, a skill saw, a router, and a belt sander.

Digging Holes and Setting Bases

After acquiring the materials, Matt began by digging the holes for the cement bases. The depth and width of these holes depend on the length of the posts and the stability desired. Once dug, the cement bases were set in place, and the posts were positioned before pouring concrete.

Erecting the Posts

The next stage involved erecting the posts. However, due to some weight variations and different densities of wood, the team found lifting them quite challenging. They used a hammer drill and carbide bits for drilling into the concrete bases.

Adjusting Post Heights

Once all posts were in place, the team addressed any leveling issues. They found that not all posts were supplied flat from the factory and had to be adjusted. Various techniques were employed, including using chainsaws with 2×4 guides outside.

Staining

After adjusting the post heights, the team stained the pergola posts to protect them against sun, rain, and mold. They used a chocolate stain that was versatile in terms of color and could be layered for deeper tones.

Moving Forward

With the posts erected and stained, the team is now moving forward with framing. They plan to continue this project despite facing various challenges along the way. The final stages involve putting up the last few beams before installing a roof panel.
