Sailing Slow to Menorca – An Unforgettable Journey
In this episode, we embark on a slow sail from Mallorca to Menorca, embracing the calm and peaceful journey across the Mediterranean Sea. Join us as we navigate the tranquil waters, explore the stunning beauty of Minorca, and enjoy the serene experience aboard our vessel.
Our adventure begins at Illa Gavina, where we make a sudden decision to leave sooner than planned for an anchorage or port on the east side of Menorca. Instead of waiting until tomorrow morning, we choose to set sail directly from Mallorca to Minorca, leaving our destination behind and planning to spend a night at sea. We eagerly anticipate arriving in the dark morning hours when it’s still dark.
As we begin our voyage, we are mindful of maintaining an enjoyable pace, averaging three knots, and enjoying the serene beauty around us. We find solace in the stability of the ship and the peace that accompanies slow sailing. Our hope is to catch some rest during this enchanting night, taking turns keeping watch while trusting the autopilot to guide us.
Navigating through unexpected changes in wind direction and sudden rainfall, we manage to stay clear of any major weather disturbances. Upon arriving at Minorca’s northeastern coast, we secure our position at a floating dock surrounded by other boats, finding comfort in the community feel that this setting exudes. Our chosen spot proves to be not only budget-friendly but also conveniently located near essential amenities such as restaurants and shops.
We take time to explore and learn about Minorca, discovering its fascinating history, hidden treasures, and picturesque landscapes. From admiring breathtaking sunsets to taking leisurely walks through historic town sites like Ciutadella de Menorca, we immerse ourselves in the beauty that surrounds us. The people we encounter are warm and welcoming, contributing to our positive experience on this island getaway.
In our quest to see as much of Minorca as possible, we rent a car for a few days, enabling us to venture further beyond our anchorage. Exploring Cala Porda and its narrow entrance serves as an example of the challenges and rewards that come with discovering lesser-known coves along the coastline.
As we conclude this slow sail episode, we are left in awe of the hidden gems Minorca has to offer and eagerly look forward to sharing more adventures from our journey. The beauty of sailing at a leisurely pace allows for rich experiences, making us appreciate every moment spent on board and within the incredible locations that await us.
Join us next time as we embark on further excursions along the island’s north coast, seeking shelter during strong winds, and returning to where we caught fish. Until then, remember that the most beautiful destinations often require taking your time and embracing the unexpected.
After a quick change of plan we do a night sail directly to Menorca but slowly because we don´t want to get there to early but not to slow because there is thunder and lightnings around Menorca. We rent a old but beautiful Jaguar and do a roadtrip on the island while the Mistral is howling from North.
We are a middle aged couple that has left our hectic business lives to go sailing with our sailboat Fridá af Wisby and our cat Litza. Our goal is sail the Mediterrainean Sea and really enjoy life.
Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. Gitte has also grown up with boats and spent every summer sailing with her father as a teenager but made a pause of about 15 years without sailing as an adult, had just begun to pick-up the interest before she meet Anders in 2017. Onboard we also have our cat Litza a 4 year old Devon Rex we call her the cattain because cats always decide over their humans.
Fridá af Wisby is a Wauquiez 47 pilot saloon that we Gitte and Anders bought in UK in 2019 and that we have sailed to Gotland and in season 1 2020 we sail in the Baltic Sea. During season 2 We sailded south to Dieppe Normandy France. After a winter in France in Season 3 we started to sail the Atlantic coast of Europe to Xufre in Spain where we lifted the boat over the summer while we where back in Gotland to work at our hostel we got there. Season 4 got a short sailing season where we only sailed to Lagos on the Algarve coast of Portugal where we hauled out once again this time to go throug a long list of boatwork and to build a solar arch to make the boat more self-suficient with electricity. After 6 months in Lagos we kicked-off season 5 with real bluewater sailing first to the northerly Atlantic island Porto Santo and Madeira and then further out to the Azores that lays in the middle of the Atlantic ocean before turning back towards the mainland and south coast of Portugal again.
