After four years, two lockdowns and 14 countries we have completed a pretty good lap of the Med and are now making our way West out of the Strait of Gibraltar and into the Atlantic ocean.
The Western passage through the strait is always a much more tricky prospect than going East because the bulk of the current flow through the strait is due to evaporation in the Med not the tide. This means the current doesn’t flow into the med for long and you will have to deal with fighting an East bound current at some point. If you’ve planned it well and have a good Easterly breeze you will get some useful sailing breeze for sure as it’s a windy place, but that wind will be against tide so you’ll also have steep waves.
All that being said it’s a great place to sail!
Do have a look at the links below with have the entrants for this years ‘Young Cruisers Awards’ which will be given out at the Annapolis boat show next month. If we get enough votes then we will get to go the to awards party and we can give you all the gossip!…
