ORCA | a tablet based navigation that’s smarter than the rest

Welcome to our comprehensive review of Orca Navigational Software. We’ve put it through rigorous testing over a year, sailing over 5,000 miles with the system, allowing us to share insights and opinions about this advanced software solution designed for the boating & sailing industry.

Introducing Orca Navigational Software

Similar in concept to Navionics, Savvy Navi and other tablet-based navigation systems, the Orca is designed to offer users a more sophisticated navigational solution by incorporating telemetry from the boat’s own systems through a key into the NMEA network. For those looking for an innovative way to manage and improve their boating & sailing experiences, the Orca is worth considering.

How Does Orca Work?

The core of this navigation software is the Orca Tablet (an Android device that’s also sold separately). However, if you decide to purchase it along with your installation kit, the software will be fully compatible with your existing tablet or smartphone. Its use of advanced GPS and AIS technology provides accurate positioning while on water.

Features & Functionality

  • Autopilot control: Users can manage their autopilot from any point in the boat.
  • Radar integration: If your radar is compatible with NMEA, it will work seamlessly within this software.
  • Route planning and tracking
  • In-depth charting and map rendering
  • AIS collision avoidance system that plots the closest point of contact for nearby boats

The user-friendly interface is a standout feature, allowing users to customize their screen layouts, making it simple to access key information quickly. Orca also offers the added bonus of working with both internet-based and local data sources for accurate and reliable navigational assistance.

Orca vs Navionics

In terms of charting capabilities, while Orca provides detailed maps for coastal and inland navigation, it falls short in depth compared to Navionics. For instance, when trying to navigate the Bays around Grenada, both platforms were useful; however, the Navionics platform offered a clearer presentation of underwater depth.

User Experience

Over our 5,000-mile test period, we experienced minimal issues with the Orca software. During one episode where AIS functionality was disrupted onboard, Orca managed to maintain accuracy using its local GPS system on the tablet. Its in-built redundancy and responsiveness provide confidence while navigating complex waterways.

Technical Details & Improvements

  • Polling (not necessary for most cruisers)
  • AIS target accuracy – shows objects outside of the AIS range, allowing users to anticipate nearby ships
  • Chart updates – new features and charts added frequently as user inputs inform development progress

The Orca navigational software continues to evolve with new updates. Upcoming developments include radar guard zones, a long-awaited feature for enhanced collision avoidance safety.

Conclusion

All things considered, the Orca Navigational Software presents a strong alternative to traditional onboard navigation systems. Despite minor limitations such as depth chart accuracy in comparison with Navionics, it offers excellent AIS integration, an intuitive user interface and continual software updates.

You may have heard of this latest tablet based navigations device as it's been around for a little while now. We've had ours for over a year a sailed over 5,000 miles with it so it's now had a fare test.

In the early days there were some glitches but the product showed good promise and there have been a constant stream of updated to iron out and improve things. I think they've come up with an impressive, powerful bit of kit that's definitely worth looking at, so here's my review.
