Insta360 or GoPro?

I am a heavy user of action cams, although it is possible to get a more ‘filmic’ (low depth of field) look with mirrorless/DSLR cameras, I prefer the smooth motion you get with modern action cams, so unless we are sitting still (rare for us) it’s often our camera of choice.
Also living on a boat the level of waterproofing is far superior on these cameras (My main camera, FujiFilm X-T9 is in for water damage repair at the moment:(
So my action cams have to do more than just record the action, in fact their number one role is for walking – talking PTC’s so good sound is a must too.
I also tend to shoot multi camera interviews and often use several GoPros as reverse / wide cameras and I think in the last few of these I’ve done we haven’t managed to get through the interviews without one, two or all of the GoPros flaking out on us for various reasons!
So something had to be done. I’ve been trying out the Insta360 X2 and liked it. So I got an X3 and an Insta360 ONE RS (I know Insta’s naming of it’s cameras needs some work!) So far I’ve had 100% reliability with these cameras ( I’ve had the X2 for a year, the others just for a few months, so early days) I’ve also been impressed with the quality, adaptability and general design of Insta’s gear and accessories so I thought I’d put together a little run through of what they have to offer both in 360 mode and in a standard single lens mode.
I’d be interested in your thoughts, personally I think GoPro are killing themselves by putting out glitchy products, just as it seems DJI are doing with their drones at the moment. Is it that a company gets to a certain size and starts cutting corners with quality control? That’s how is seems to me.
Anyhow I’m very glad we now have Insta360 as a great alternative (perhaps it will make GoPro up their game?) and we also have some excellent drone alternatives (especially for us guys on the water in the form of waterproof drones) I’ll be testing another one of them soon and coming up with some interesting ways of using an Insta 360 camera on a drone… watch this space!
