Sailing Through Disaster: Hurricane Beryl’s Carnage in Carriacou’s Mangroves | Ep119

In this harrowing episode, we dive deep into the heart of the Caribbean as Hurricane Beryl unleashed its fury on the tranquil paradise of Carriacou.Witness firsthand how this catastrophic storm battered the once-protected mangroves, leaving behind a trail of destruction and shattered dreams for those who called it home.

A Cruel Surprise

The island paradise that Carriacou once was has now turned into an eerie landscape of wreckage, where even the mighty mangroves couldn’t withstand the power of Hurricane Beryl. The storm tore through with relentless intensity, leaving behind a haunting silence that echoed across the battered coastline.

Tales of Courage and Resilience

Amidst the chaos and despair, brave souls stood their ground to protect their beloved boats and the livelihoods they represented. These determined individuals faced terrifying odds as hurricane-force winds tore through the mangrove channels. With courage etched on their faces, they tied themselves to the decks of their vessels, praying for a miracle that would see them through to another dawn.

Communal Spirit Rises from the Ashes

In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl’s wrath, the cruising community united in their efforts to help those left in the lurch. As boats lay grounded and homes were reduced to piles of rubble, an air of camaraderie enveloped the island as locals and tourists alike joined forces to rebuild and restore the shattered lives around them.

A Community Unites for Aid

Operation Cruisers Aid emerged from this shared sentiment of solidarity, offering a lifeline to those whose boats had been reduced to mere shells of their former selves. Donations poured in from around the globe as people rallied behind a cause they knew too well – lending support when it was needed most.

Finding Hope amidst Devastation

As we reflect upon this incredible story, it is heartening to see how resilience and hope emerged even in the face of unimaginable adversity. Despite being left on their own in the midst of a catastrophe, the people of Carriacou found strength in unity and compassion as they began their arduous journey back towards reclaiming their slice of paradise.

Remembering Those Who Stayed

To the brave souls who stood against the fury of Hurricane Beryl, and to all those who have shown compassion and support in rebuilding what was lost, we extend our gratitude. May their stories live on, serving as powerful reminders of the enduring spirit that defines us all during our darkest hours.

This episode has been a roller coaster ride. So many brave people telling us their stories, sharing their footage, and all while they are receiving no outside help for themselves.
The mangroves in Carriacou were supposed to be safe. A hurricane hole where those who couldn’t escape the storm by sailing further south, would be able to tie up their boats and sit out the worst of the hurricane. It didn’t work.
In the past two weeks cruisers here have been helping each other recover boats. Most boats are badly damaged, others have sunk to the bottom of this shallow lagoon. Nearly all the boats have been looted.
Operation Cruisers Aid is a charity that started out as cruisers helping people on land. They have provided much needed emergency aid. However, they have agreed that since the bigger NGOs have arrived, OCA could provide any future funds they receive to help cruisers. They have already provided a crash pump and flotation aids to help get boats out before they are lost. They are now coordinating the relief effort for cruisers here.
Any proceeds from this video will be going directly to the cruisers who need our help.
