Freeing a fouled anchor using the Ultra Hook

We previously made a video on how to get a stuck anchor free from the sea bed. Well we had lots of questions about what you do if rather than getting the anchor stuck on the sea bed you drag something up with it, usually a chain or cable.
These can be fiendish to get off once hooked. Dropping the anchor quickly can free it if you’re really lucky (never worked for me) manhandling the offending chain or cable off can work if you’re determined , and lucky. I’ve managed it once from the dinghy but nearly lost a finger in the process , so decided at that point there must be a better way…. And there is!

What you need is a hook that you can get under the object to lift it clear, easy. But having done that you now have whatever you caught hanging on your hook and pulling hard, so unless you are going to ditch the hook every time you need one that is shaped right to be able to tilt and drop or has some other release mechanism. We like the Ultra trip hook as it’s simple and works really well and as with all Ultra’s gear is good quality.

A big part of cruising is fixing things as you go along and you can bet things will go wrong at the most inopportune moments. We've had more things break in the last month than ever before and we are in the one place in the Caribbean that you can get no he...

BROKEN! You’re on your own in Cuba | Ep139
After running aground in the last episode sailing through Southern Cuba, our luck doesn't really get any better this week. Cuba is not the place to have things fail as there is no way of getting anything here directly and importing spares is very difficult...

The worst place to run aground | Ep138
The Cuban coastguard doesn't have a boat. One sailor we spoke to here was told that if he wanted his boat pulled off the rocks they would have to hire a boat from Jamaica. So, this is not the place to find yourself hard aground! Added to that, we can 't ...

We have been in the Cayman Islands longer than expected. It's a hard place to leave! But we were equally excited to be sailing to Cuba. Somewhere we have never been before. We couldn't leave without diving on the Kittiwake, an ex navy submarine rescue vess...
