Ep13 – Lockdown at Sea!

Denied permission to enter port, stopped from landing our dinghy on a remote beach on the first day of lockdown in Spain. The Spanish authorities moved quickly, so quickly that it caught a lot of people out including us. After having spent a couple of weeks at anchored we venture ashore for a walk on a sunny weekend there are a few people out walking dogs and running but there is also a police man who tells everyone they must return home. Lockdown has started. We realise in a state of lockdown we will be short on food, water and gas for cooking so must find a way to restock. This was not how we thought our sailing season would start this year!

Corona virus has taken hold in Spain and extreme measures have been brought in everywhere. Marina offices are unmanned and it’s only when we arrive at a marina entrance that someone answers the VHF to tell us we can’t land and must leave.

It’s a world crisis and in some ways we feel lucky to be out at anchor in our own boat / isolation ward! But there are real issues in getting essential supplies.

This is a special extra episode of Sailing Fair Isle all filmed in the last 4 days to show the situation as it stands right now.

Please share this within the sailing community to let people know what’s going on.

We will continue to supply up to date films as we sail so if you also hit the bell that pops up after you subscribe you will get a notification as soon as we release another film. Subscribing cost you nothing and you will get no junk mail etc because of it. It just helps us be seen.

Can you afford to come to the Bahamas?!!! | Ep142
Everyone tells us we can't afford not to come to the Bahamas. It has the clearest waters at the perfect temperature. Strings of fabulous islands and perfect trade wind sailing in protected waters. However, there's a way to come to the Bahamas and that's we...

Epic Sail in the clearest water with the largest fish yet! | Ep141
It's the last of the Cuba series, but it all happens in this episode. We sail the whole Northern coast of Cuba, hide from a storm, dock in over 30 knots of wind (without the bow thruster), run out of food and then see the other side of Cuba (it's a shock!)...

FIX IT! No help – off grid cruising | Ep140
A big part of cruising is fixing things as you go along and you can bet things will go wrong at the most inopportune moments. We've had more things break in the last month than ever before and we are in the one place in the Caribbean that you can get no he...

BROKEN! You’re on your own in Cuba | Ep139
After running aground in the last episode sailing through Southern Cuba, our luck doesn't really get any better this week. Cuba is not the place to have things fail as there is no way of getting anything here directly and importing spares is very difficult...

The worst place to run aground | Ep138
The Cuban coastguard doesn't have a boat. One sailor we spoke to here was told that if he wanted his boat pulled off the rocks they would have to hire a boat from Jamaica. So, this is not the place to find yourself hard aground! Added to that, we can 't ...
