Diving with statues and venomous fish | Ep114

Welcome aboard our sailing journey to the captivating island of Grenada! Join us as we uncover the magic hidden beneath its crystal-clear waters, dive amongst fascinating statues, encounter venomous lionfish, and venture into lush jungles filled with stunning waterfalls. Our thrilling voyage will take you through a memorable exploration that showcases both the challenges and the beauty of sailing in this picturesque Caribbean destination.

Diving Amongst Mesmerizing Underwater Statues

As we anchored just around the corner from Grenada’s Nature Reserve, we were thrilled to discover an underwater Sculpture Park lying just below the surface. With over 65 statues secured to the seabed, it was like exploring an entire world created from the imagination of talented artists. Made from neutral pH cement and designed to provide a habitat for Coral, these statues will gradually merge into the environment as nature takes its course.

Catching Venomous Lionfish

Determined to contribute to conservation efforts, we joined local divers in hunting venomous lionfish. With their non-discriminating appetite for juvenile fish, these invasive species pose a significant threat to the island’s delicate ecosystem. As challenging as it was thrilling, we learned the proper techniques for spearfishing these elusive creatures and enjoyed the delicious rewards of our hard work at the brewery’s annual lionfish feast.

Exploring the Lush Jungles and Waterfalls

Around every corner, Grenada proved to be an island paradise teeming with adventure. Venturing inland, we found ourselves in verdant jungles filled with waterfalls perfect for brave jumps. At the more touristy Anndale Waterfall, professional jumpers showed us how it’s done, while the Seven Sisters waterfall offered a stunning series of cascading pools.

The Grenada Adventure Continues

Our incredible journey in Grenada has left us with memories to cherish and stories to share. As we continue our voyage north towards St Lucia, where our youngest daughter Millie will join us for a couple of weeks, we’ll surely have more adventures awaiting.

There's lots to do in Grenada on and off shore. Diving on the underwater statues in the marine park was a real experience and we get out first taste of Lionfish, delicious!
As with everything in life there are challenges though as Judy has to make an unexpected trip to the States and I have to deal with getting the boat settled in a very rolly anchorage.

Many thanks to Tom and Crispin from Aquanauts for explaining the Lionfish problem to us and to Joel and Carston for talking to us about their epic trip.

Building a J-Pole AIS Antenna

Is Bermuda better than the Bahamas for cruising? Ep 147
Many people just use Bermuda as a quick staging post on a West East Atlantic crossing. We think that is a massive mistake as Bermuda is one of our favourite places. Now that The Bahamas have hiked their cruising costs to thousands of pounds per vessel, Ber...
