Dyneema Lifelines Upgrade: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hey everyone, welcome back to the channel. In this episode, we dive into an exciting project: upgrading our boat’s lifelines from old stainless steel ones to lightweight Dyneema lifelines. This is a DIY job that I’ve been putting off for some time, and now it’s finally happening. But this isn’t just about replacing the lifelines – we’re also going to fit Lifeline netting for my daughter, making our boat even safer.

Why Dyneema?

Dyneema has several advantages over traditional stainless steel cables: it’s extremely lightweight and, despite being cheaper, provides a similar level of strength. It’s perfect for recreational boaters like us who don’t need to worry about every gram on board.

Step 1: Removing Old Lifelines

The process is straightforward: undo the lock nuts at each end of the lifeline, turn the turnbuckle to release it, then slide off the locking nut. With the lifeline freed, you can pull it through the apertures on the stanchions.

Step 2: Preparing Holes for New Lifelines

To prevent chafe, sand down the inside of each hole in your stanchions with sandpaper. This step is crucial to ensure your Dyneema lifelines last as long as possible without damage.

Precautions with Dyneema:

Dyneema can be vulnerable to chafe, but it’s extremely strong even when damaged – just look at that breaking load of about 3,000 kilos for the 6 mil version. Yet, a Lifeline should stop somebody from falling overboard, so we need to ensure they’re secure.

Step 3: Attaching One End

Screw one end into the pull pit and slide the Dyneema lifeline through the holes in your stanchions back towards the cockpit. Ensure it’s pulled tight before moving on.

Splicing the Lifeline

To attach the end of the Dyneema lifeline to itself, I’m using a splice method that’s easy and strong. It creates a loop at one end that you can easily use to attach to your boat.

I learned this technique from The Rigging Doctor on YouTube, who’ve been using their Dyneema rigging for 9 years without any issues. This splice forms the core of our lifeline, and it’s incredibly secure.

Step 4: Securing the Other End

To finish off this end, I’m attaching a stainless steel thimble to give the Lifeline a nice loop at one end. This thimble can help prevent wear and tear over time.

Tying Off the Lifelines with Lashing

Once you have your Dyneema lifeline spliced, secure each end by wrapping it around the stanchion base and tying off using a lashing made from thin Dyneema. This makes the connection very tight.

The Result: A Stronger, Lighter Lifeline

Your new Dyneema lifelines should now be secure and in place, providing an excellent alternative to heavy stainless steel versions without sacrificing safety or durability. Remember, this process doesn’t have to be perfect as long as you’re using your Dyneema lines at roughly 10% of their breaking strain.

Maintain Your Lifelines

Ensure you maintain your new lifelines properly: keep an eye out for chafe points and address them promptly. Also, inspect the lifelines periodically to ensure they’re secure and free from any damage.

The Final Thought

We hope you found this guide useful for upgrading your boat’s safety gear with lightweight, durable Dyneema lifelines. These are an affordable and effective way to upgrade your sailing experience, making it safer and more enjoyable.
