The crew of Sailing Bohemia experienced one of the most dramatic passages they’ve ever faced when an unexpected storm hit them while sailing towards their destination, Aruba. Despite a seemingly calm window around Cabo de la Vela, nature had different plans for this adventure.
Having initially set off from an easy-going window, the sailors were unprepared when a sudden trough opened up in front of them. With 34-knot sustained winds and the sea state getting worse by the hour, the team was left facing the challenges that lay ahead.
In these conditions, the crew had no choice but to hunker down and face the storm. Despite only being 50 miles out from Aruba, it felt as though they weren’t making any progress whatsoever.
Sailor after sailor did their best to keep the ship under control, adjusting sails and communicating with other vessels via radio to stay updated on the storm’s conditions. Even so, it felt like they were stuck in a never-ending fight against Mother Nature.
It seemed that this unexpected storm had put a real dampener on an otherwise flawless passage. The crew could only hope and pray for the winds to subside and allow them safe passage into their intended harbor.
Much to everyone’s relief, the winds did finally calm down. However, this still presented several challenges as they were now on the wrong side of the bay from their intended check-in location.
The team had to stay alert for another three hours before they were finally able to enter the harbor. The check-in process went smoothly, although their spear guns had to be confiscated due to local laws.
It is only upon finally stepping onto the island of Aruba that one can truly appreciate what the sailors have achieved. The storm, though trying and challenging, served as both a test of their endurance and skill in sailing.
In conclusion, the crew thanked Javier for his ongoing support as one of their patrons. They highlighted how, without his kindness, it would not have been possible to continue on these unforgettable sailing journeys.
