We needed to get Big Lost to Tahiti.
After dealing with alternator problems off and on since Saint Martin, there’s an alternator specialist in Tahiti who can finally help us figure out what’s going on. But sometimes the smartest decision you can make while cruising is deciding not to go.
With 25–30 knot winds headed our way, and Tahiti’s Airport Anchorage exposed to swell and swirling currents that can cause boats to drag, we decided getting there could wait.
Especially after helping another cruiser pull his boat off the reef.
Instead, we moved Big Lost deeper into Moorea to the protection of Cook’s Bay and settled in to wait out the weather.
And this week, life aboard looks a little different.
There’s homeschool, boat projects, watercolor painting, video games, workouts, and Maddie takes over the galley to make chocolate chip cookies. Meanwhile, the wind keeps building outside — although apparently the locals didn’t get the memo, because they’re still wakeboarding and paddling through it all.
Not every week of cruising is a huge adventure.
Sometimes it’s knowing when not to go.
Hopefully next week… Tahiti.
