Temazcal Ceremony in Mexico | Sailing Avocet

After years of sailing adventures across the globe, Sailing Avocet’s recent spontaneous journey to join their friend Dakota in a tamascal ceremony in Mexico proved to be one of the most memorable experiences. This ancient ceremonial tradition, guided by a skilled shaman, offers spiritual cleansing and healing through steam and heat.

Joining a Temazcal Ceremony in Mexico

Dakota and his friends invited the Sailing Avocet team to join them in a tamascal ceremony at the Stonehouse, which turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Although it was semi-traditional, the team still immersed themselves fully in this ancient practice.

Ancient Ritual Led by a Shaman

Conducted under the guidance of a shaman, or Tascero, in Mexico, this ancient ceremony takes place inside a small domed structure referred to as the tamascal. The purpose of the tascal is said to be a spiritual and mental rebirth for participants.

Preliminary Preparations

Hours before the two-hour ceremony began, there was much to be done. While one group prepared the sacred stones used in the ritual, others headed to nearby hot springs for relaxation.

The Ceremony

Before entering the tamascal, participants were cleansed from head to toe using smoldering copal by the shaman. With that ritual complete, the group moved into the dark stone igloo and sat in a circle, waiting for what was to come next.

Spiritual Cleansing

During this ancient ceremony, 13 red hot rocks were introduced four times. Between these entries, the group sang traditional songs as they were cleansed spiritually by the shaman.

An Unforgettable Experience

Chris’s presence anchored Kelli during a particularly intense moment of heat and steam, helping her stay focused on her mantra for survival. The experience pushed the limits and exposed vulnerabilities that led to growth and healing.

Navigating Afterward

Af

ter experiencing such intense heat, the group needed time to cool off and readjust before embarking on a series of car rides, bus rides, hikes, and sailboat journeys. Although challenging, each person was forever grateful for their participation in this ancient tradition.

Valuable Memories

Looking back on the experience, the Sailing Avocet crew can now appreciate how a tamascal ceremony brought them closer together and expanded their understanding of the ancient practice. The hot springs hike before the ceremony only enhanced the sense of community within the group.

An Ongoing Journey

The conclusion of the tamascal did not mark an end to the adventure; instead, it served as a catalyst for even further exploration. The crew continued their journey, embracing the elements with open arms in their next voyage across Banderas Bay.

Reflecting on this memorable experience allows them all to realize the value of spontaneous adventures and how these opportunities push individuals to step out of comfort zones and into new levels of personal growth. Participating in the tamascal ceremony provided healing, cleansing, and rejuvenation that will forever be cherished by everyone who took part.
