S2E34 shaft, thru-hulls and a little bit of fun (Dominican Republic)

S2E34: shaft, thru-hulls and a little bit of fun (Dominican Republic)

In this episode of Sailing Artha, we dive into the process of installing the shaft, along with cleaning up various areas of our boat. This includes tidying up the storage compartments, installing through hulls, and going on a fun motorcycle ride in the Dominican Republic.

After moving to New New Amsterdam, located right in town, we realized that our boat was in desperate need of some TLC. As living on the boat was still several weeks away, we decided to clean it up and organize any essential items that needed to be placed aboard before it went into the water.

Cleaning the Storage Compartments

The first order of business was cleaning out the storage compartments where a honeybee nest had been situated for quite some time. The dead bees that had been in vinegar for months were definitely going to be a sight to behold, but necessary nonetheless.

Installing Thru-Hulls

With the boat’s interior cleaned up, we moved on to installing through hulls. We started by removing the propeller and attempting to put in the new shaft. However, upon encountering unexpected issues like a second cutless bearing and broken stern tube, our progress was temporarily halted. With these challenges now addressed, we were able to move forward with properly installing all the necessary thru-hulls.

A Fun Motorcycle Ride

To relax after our strenuous work, we joined a local motorcycle group for an adventure through the countryside. Along with fellow riders and the Luon Motorcycle Group, we visited nearby antenna towers, Sabrina’s farm, and the Six Rivers Road before concluding our trip back at Adventure Man Dan’s place.

Key Takeaways

  • Tidying up and organizing essential items on the boat prior to moving aboard permanently
  • The importance of thoroughly checking for any hidden issues when installing thru-hulls
  • Scheduling some time off to enjoy activities such as motorcycle rides in foreign countries with new friends.

Next Steps

In the upcoming episodes, we will be focusing on finishing up any remaining repairs on our boat while preparing for its eventual launch into the water. These tasks include hanging the rudder, packing the stern tube, and reblocking the entire vessel.

Be sure to join us as we embark on these exciting projects, and remember that all of this would not be possible without your continued support. This is a fun little video of boat projects and adventures. There’s a surprise when I put the shaft in, so I sort through that, then join a new friend at the beach with the dogs. Then it’s back to boat projects and putting in the thru-hulls, then wrapping up a motorcycle ride with the Luperon Motorcycle Group and finishing the thru-hull install. Thanks for watching!
