S2E31 painting the topsides and a day of fishing (Dominican Republic)

In this episode, Sailing Artha shares an adventure filled with both the challenges of painting the topsides of their sailboat and the exhilaration of a successful fishing trip. This week’s highlight is all about conquering the tough task of prepping and painting the main body of the boat in the sunny climes of the Dominican Republic.

Sanding to Perfection

To achieve a smooth and pristine finish, Sailing Artha went through multiple rounds of sanding. After the initial rough sanding, they meticulously refined the surface using different grits of sandpaper—280 then 380—before applying the final coats.

Establishing a Point of Reference

The process also involved carefully establishing a point of reference for the water line, using a barrier coat that was intended to extend two inches above the top of the boot stripe. This preparation step ensures a professional-looking paint job and highlights attention to detail.

Risking It with Found Paint

Although it posed a bit of risk, Sailing Artha decided to use the found paint on the boat for cost-saving reasons. Despite potential doubts about its quality or age, this decision taught a valuable lesson – that known and quality materials generally yield better results.

The Paint Job: Salvaged Success

In the end, Sailing Artha’s persistence paid off. After checking back on the job multiple times and experimenting with some wet sanding, they managed to salvage a successful paint outcome. It’s these trials that contribute to valuable experience in sailing and boat maintenance.

Relaxation on the Water

With a challenging task mastered, it was time for some relaxation and enjoyment on the water. Sailing Artha joined friends on a fishing trip where they caught a Mahi Mahi—a highlight of the episode.

The Perfect Fishing Spot

The water was particularly calm, providing crystal clear views not usually seen. The tranquility and serenity of this moment contrasts the diligent work earlier in prepping and painting the boat.

Trolling Technique

This was also Sailing Artha’s first time using a rod and reel for trolling. Learning these new techniques adds depth to their sailing repertoire and ensures that each adventure offers something unique.

A Rewarding Catch

The reward of catching a Mahi Mahi after years since the last such catch, while cruising with parents as a kid, adds to this fishing trip’s significance. It’s moments like these that underscore the rewards of sailing and the joy it brings.

Sailing Adventures Ahead

The upcoming video promises exciting content with a focus on hanging and painting the rudder, another critical component of boat maintenance and enhancement.

Support Sailing Artha

Sailing enthusiasts can find more updates early through Patreon, providing support to the channel. Every bit of assistance is truly appreciated by this passionate sailing community.

To summarize, this episode covers a blend of determination and relaxation as Sailing Artha navigates the tasks of painting their sailboat’s topsides in the Dominican Republic while also enjoying the serene experience of a successful fishing trip with friends. As always, safety, perseverance, and adventure are the core themes throughout each journey.

I explain a little of why the topsides didn’t go as expected, and then end with a fun and relaxing day of fishing where I actually catch a fish!
