S2E23 Relocating my honeybees (Dominican Republic)

On a recent episode of Sailing Artha, the channel focused on the process of relocating honeybees from their boat in the Dominican Republic. This is no easy task, especially for a sailor, as it requires precise and meticulous actions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both bees and humans involved.

Preparing for the Bee Removal

The episode begins with Sailing Artha discussing the challenges of relocating their honeybees. They are both sad and excited at the same time as they prepare their equipment. This includes a hazmat suit, diving boots, full face mask, a spatula for scraping out the hive, and duct tape to seal off any potential entrances for bees.

The Smoke Method

To get the honeybees ready for relocation, Sailing Artha uses a smoke method. This calms the bees down and makes it easier to remove them from their current location on the sailboat. As Matias assists in this process, he shares his expertise and guidance with the viewers.

The Hive Extraction

Once the bees are calm enough, Sailing Artha carefully extracts the hive from their sailboat. This task is done using proper equipment and techniques to avoid getting stung. The honeybees, which were at first chaotic due to being upset with their sudden change in environment, eventually settle down, showcasing a truly remarkable process.

Identifying the Queen Bee

The next crucial step involves identifying the queen bee. This is essential to ensure the survival of the honeybee colony and for successful relocation. Sailing Artha diligently works through this part of the process, explaining how important it is to locate the queen before relocating.

Matthias is a beekeeper from Argentina and he helped me relocate my bees. We had a very difficult time finding the queen because of the false floor and the additional storage compartment in my boat that had a hole in the wall separating the initial storage compartment. After we relocated the best the first time, I had to take some more serious action and unfortunately, there were some fatalities.
